Spring at the Grand Canyon means moderate temperatures on the South Rim (60s-70s by day), wildflowers along Hermit Road, and the North Rim still closed (opens May 15). South Rim is the year-round experience; North Rim adds 1,000 ft of elevation and a wholly different ecosystem when open. Trailer Village (full hookups, any length, $60/night) is the prize. Mather Campground (dry, 30 ft max, $18) is the more affordable backup. Both book months ahead.

Safety considerations
- Inner-canyon heat kills hikers every year. Don't descend without 1 gallon water + plan to turn around at half your water.
- Mules have right-of-way on trails. Step uphill, stay still.
- Wildlife (elk, deer, condors) routinely cross roads. Drive carefully.
- Cliff edges are unforgiving. Stay behind railings.
- Lightning on rim in afternoon — descend before storms.
No surprises
Honest pricing reality
What it actually costs
Trailer Village: $60/night with hookups. Mather: $18/night dry. Outside-park RV parks in Tusayan: $40-80/night.
Quick answers
Frequently asked
When does North Rim open?
Typically May 15 through October 15, weather dependent. The North Rim is 1,000 ft higher than the South Rim and gets significantly more snow.
Can I get full hookups at the Grand Canyon?
Yes — Trailer Village on the South Rim has full hookups (water, electric, sewer) and accepts any length RV. $60/night, books 6+ months ahead.
How crowded is the Grand Canyon in spring?
Less than summer but still busy. Spring break weeks (mid-March to mid-April) bring spikes. May is typically manageable.
Can I hike into the canyon in spring?
Yes — spring is one of the best windows. Inner canyon is 30°F warmer than rim. Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails are the classics. Don't attempt rim-to-river in one day without serious experience.
What the NPS site won't tell you
The NPS doesn't promote this enough: the Hermit Road shuttle (free, March-November) gets you to 8 viewpoints with virtually no crowds compared to the central visitor area. Hermit's Rest at sunset is one of the most underrated experiences in the park.
