Winter is Glacier at its most peaceful. Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed from mid-October to late June. Access is limited to the west side (Apgar, lower Lake McDonald) and the east-side gateway towns. Apgar Campground is the only year-round campground inside the park, with primitive winter sites and no services. Most RVers stay in West Glacier or Whitefish gateway RV parks and day-trip in for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Wildlife concentrates at lower elevations. Wolves, mountain lions, and lynx leave tracks. The combination of silence + clean snow + peak views is unrepeatable.

Highlights this season
Cross-country skiing at Apgar
The closed Going-to-the-Sun Road (lower section) is a 10-mile groomed XC ski route in winter. Park rig in Apgar lot, ski in.
Snowshoeing the McDonald Creek trails
Family-friendly snowshoe routes along Lake McDonald. Rentals available in West Glacier.
Wolf + mountain lion tracking
Winter snow makes predator tracking accessible. Join a ranger-led winter walk or hire a local guide.
Empty Lake McDonald
Drive the lake-shore road in winter (if plowed) — frozen surface, snow-laden peaks, total silence.
Whitefish Mountain Resort
Local ski hill 30 min from West Glacier. Family-friendly alternative when in-park trails are too icy.
Time it right
When to go
Best window to plan
January through mid-February for the most reliable snow. Late February starts melting at lower elevations. Avoid December's short days unless you're after holiday-quiet solitude.

Safety considerations
- Hypothermia is the leading winter danger.
- Avalanche risk in backcountry — check flatheadavalanche.org.
- Wildlife (including bears in late winter) may be present. Carry bear spray.
- Cell service is non-existent in most of the park.
- Ice on lakes is unpredictable — stay off frozen water.

Honest pricing reality
What it actually costs

Quick answers
Frequently asked
Can I RV camp in Glacier in winter?
Yes, at Apgar Campground year-round (primitive winter sites, $10/night, no water). Most RVers prefer gateway-town private RV parks with hookups.
What's accessible in Glacier in winter?
Apgar Village, lower Lake McDonald, lower Going-to-the-Sun Road (groomed XC ski route), the trails around Apgar. East side (Many Glacier, Two Medicine) is closed.
Is the road to Polebridge open in winter?
Sometimes — the Outside North Fork Road can be impassable. Check Flathead County road status before heading up.
Where are the best winter wildlife viewing spots?
Lower-elevation areas around Lake McDonald and the North Fork. Wolves, mountain lions, lynx leave tracks in fresh snow. Bring binoculars and patience.
What the NPS site won't tell you
The NPS doesn't market this, but: the Polebridge area (when the road is open) has some of the best winter wildlife viewing in the lower 48. The Polebridge Mercantile is a year-round outpost — call ahead. From there, you can XC ski or snowshoe into the North Fork section with essentially zero other humans.
