Summer is Glacier at its full majesty. Going-to-the-Sun Road opens (typically late June), giving access to Logan Pass and the heart of the park. Wildflowers peak in July. Wildlife is everywhere — grizzlies in meadows, mountain goats at Logan Pass, bighorn sheep on cliffs. Vehicle reservations are required for entry during peak windows. Crowds are real — Logan Pass parking fills by 7am. Many Glacier (east side) is a separate ecosystem and worth a full 2-3 days alone. For RVers, the strategy is to stay outside the central road (your rig over 21 ft can't drive Going-to-the-Sun anyway) and shuttle in for day hikes. Apgar, Fish Creek, and St. Mary campgrounds are your bases.

Highlights this season
Going-to-the-Sun Road
Widely called the most beautiful mountain drive in North America. Park your rig at Apgar or St. Mary; ride the free shuttle the full 50 miles.
Logan Pass + Hidden Lake Overlook
Mountain goats and bighorn sheep at 6,646 ft. Hidden Lake Overlook is 2.7 mi round-trip from the visitor center.
Many Glacier — Grinnell Glacier
Many Glacier is the wildlife-densest area in the park. Grinnell Glacier hike (10 mi) ends at a turquoise glacial lake.
Lake McDonald boat tour
Glacier Park Boat Company runs vintage 1920s wooden launches across the lake. Charming and scenic.
Highline Trail
11.8 mi point-to-point from Logan Pass to The Loop. Shuttle return. One of the great alpine traverses in North America.
Time it right
When to go
Best window to plan
Mid-July through early August is peak. Late June and early September offer slightly thinner crowds with most features still accessible. Wildfire smoke can degrade air quality in late summer — check airnow.gov.

Safety considerations
- Grizzly density is among the highest in the lower 48. Carry bear spray on every hike, hike in groups, make noise.
- Lightning above tree-line is common in afternoon. Summit by noon.
- Glacial lakes are dangerously cold even in August — don't fall in.
- Wildfire smoke can shut hiking down. Check airnow.gov daily.
- Cliffside trails (Highline) have exposure — not for the acrophobic.
No surprises
Honest pricing reality
What it actually costs
Apgar, Fish Creek, St. Mary: $23/night. Many Glacier: $23/night. Outside-park RV parks in West Glacier and Whitefish: $60-130/night summer rates. Fuel: $0.40-0.70/gal premium in gateway towns.
Quick answers
Frequently asked
Do I need a vehicle reservation for Glacier in summer?
Almost certainly yes during peak windows. Glacier has implemented vehicle reservations for the Going-to-the-Sun corridor and other entry points. Check current year's policy on the NPS website.
Can I drive my RV on Going-to-the-Sun Road?
Only if under 21 ft (including any towed vehicle). Park at Apgar or St. Mary and use the free shuttle.
When do Glacier campgrounds book up?
Apgar, Fish Creek, St. Mary, and Many Glacier book up 6+ months in advance. Reservations open through Recreation.gov on a rolling 6-month window.
Is Many Glacier worth visiting separately?
Yes. Many Glacier is on the east side, 1.5-hour drive from West Glacier around the park. It's the wildlife-densest area. Plan 2-3 days there minimum.
What the NPS site won't tell you
The NPS won't promote this, but: the Two Medicine area in the southeast corner of the park sees a fraction of Logan Pass crowds and has equivalent scenery. Two Medicine Campground takes RVs to 35 ft. The Aster Falls + No Name Lake day-hikes are among the best in the park, with rarely more than a dozen other hikers on the trail.
