Spring is Zion's most comfortable season. Daytime temps in the 60s-80s, wildflowers in side canyons, and the Virgin River runs higher from snowmelt — making the Narrows a more challenging but spectacular hike. Crowds are heavy but not yet at summer peak. The canyon shuttle runs March-November; private vehicles are banned on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Watchman Campground (with electric hookups — rare in NPS) is the prize. Book 6 months ahead. The Mt. Carmel Tunnel has a 13'1" height limit and requires escort service ($15) for vehicles over 11'4" tall or 7'10" wide.

What's special now
Highlights this season
Angels Landing (permit required)
Iconic chain-assisted ridge hike. Lottery permit via Recreation.gov. Spring conditions are best — granite is dry and not blistering hot.
The Narrows wading hike
Hike up the Virgin River through a slot canyon. May has warmer water; April can still be cold. Rent dry suits in Springdale.
Canyon Overlook Trail
1-mile round-trip, family-friendly, sweeping canyon views. Trailhead just east of the Mt. Carmel Tunnel.
Kolob Canyons section
The lesser-visited northwest section. Drive your RV (no tunnel restriction). Timber Creek Overlook is an easy 1-mile hike with red-rock views.
Emerald Pools
Three-tier waterfall + pools hike. Easy lower trail, moderate upper. Spring flow is best.
Time it right
When to go
Best window to plan
April is the peak balance — wildflowers, mild temps, manageable crowds. Spring break weeks (mid-March to early April) bring spikes. Early March and late May offer slightly thinner crowds.

RV-specific considerations
Tunnel restrictions
Mt. Carmel Tunnel (Hwy 9 between Zion main canyon and east entrance): 13'1" height limit. Vehicles over 11'4" tall or 7'10" wide require escort ($15). Park rangers stop traffic so you can drive down the center.
NPS sourceShuttle-only canyon
Private vehicles banned on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive March-November. Park RV at Watchman or South Campground, ride free shuttle.
Watchman Campground
Has electric hookups on many sites (rare in NPS) — $30-50/night. Books 6 months out.
South Campground
24 ft max, no hookups, first-come-first-served (typically full by 9am).

Safety considerations
- Flash floods can hit slot canyons even when it's sunny in the main canyon. Check weather + ranger advisory before entering the Narrows or any slot.
- Angels Landing has fatalities almost every year — don't attempt in wet conditions.
- Heat builds fast on exposed hikes. Carry 3+ liters water per person on Angels Landing or Observation Point.
- Springdale is a small town — book outside-park RV parks in advance.
- Cell service is intermittent in the canyon.
No surprises
Honest pricing reality
What it actually costs
Watchman: $30/night dry, $50/night electric. South: $20/night. Springdale private RV parks: $50-100/night. Fuel: $0.30-0.50/gal premium in Springdale; better in St. George.
Quick answers
Frequently asked
Can I drive my RV through Zion?
Yes, on the main Hwy 9 corridor (with tunnel escort if over 11'4" tall or 7'10" wide). Private vehicles banned on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive March-November — park your rig, ride shuttle.
Do I need a permit for Angels Landing?
Yes, for the upper section with chains. Lottery via Recreation.gov. Apply months ahead or try the daily lottery.
Does Watchman Campground have hookups?
Yes — electric hookups on many sites ($50/night vs $30 without). Rare in the NPS. Books 6 months out.
When are Zion wildflowers at peak?
March-April for most. Side canyons (Pine Creek, Kolob) have the densest blooms.
What the NPS site won't tell you
The NPS won't promote this, but: the East Side of the park (the road from the Mt. Carmel Tunnel east toward Mt. Carmel Junction) has dramatic slickrock scenery and is RV-accessible without tunnel hassle if you stay on the east side. Park at the Canyon Overlook trailhead and explore the Many Pools area on foot — fewer than 1% of Zion visitors see this side.
