Summer is Yellowstone at its busiest and its best: every road open, all campgrounds operating, geysers erupting on schedule, and 75% of the park's 4.5 million annual visitors crammed into a 3-month window. If you want full park access, this is your window. If you want solitude, plan to be at trailheads by 6am and back at camp by 11am. The park's 142-mile figure-eight grand loop becomes a slow, scenic crawl. "Bison jams" — 30+ minute traffic stops while herds cross the road — are routine. The smart strategy is to base in one campground for 3+ nights, drive one loop per day, and embrace the slow rhythm. Afternoon thunderstorms build almost daily in July and August. Plan strenuous hikes for morning. Lightning above tree-line is a real risk on summit hikes like Mount Washburn.

Highlights this season
Old Faithful + Upper Geyser Basin
More than half of the world's active geysers are within 1.5 miles of Old Faithful. Walk the full boardwalk loop (Castle, Grand, Daisy, Riverside). Eruption predictions are posted at the visitor center.
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
The 308-ft Lower Falls is more powerful than Niagara. Artist Point at sunrise is the most-photographed view in the park — get there 30 min before sunrise for parking.
Hayden Valley wolf + grizzly viewing
Hayden Valley fills the role Lamar plays in spring. Dawn and dusk are prime — bring binoculars and patience. The Yellowstone Wolf Project posts known pack locations daily at the visitor center.
Lake Yellowstone boat rentals
Bridge Bay Marina rents motorboats and rowboats. Lake Yellowstone is the largest high-elevation lake in North America — surface temperature stays around 60°F even in August (no swimming).
Backcountry hiking — Mount Washburn
10,243-ft summit, 6.4-mile round-trip from Dunraven Pass trailhead. Reach summit by 11am to beat thunderstorms. Panoramic view of the entire park.
Time it right
When to go
Best window to plan
Plan to enter the park gates at sunrise — by 9am, the major parking lots (Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic, Artist Point) fill completely. Base in one campground for at least 3 nights; the figure-eight grand loop is too long to drive daily. Avoid weekends in late July — the park sees its peak occupancy then.

RV-specific considerations
Reservation lead time
All 12 campgrounds are reservation-required summer. Fishing Bridge (full hookups, accepts any length) books 6+ months out. Bridge Bay and Canyon Village book 3-4 months out. Madison and Grant Village fill 2 months out.
NPS sourceRoad delays
Bison jams routinely add 30-60 min to your drive. Construction projects (announced annually on NPS site) can close sections of the figure-eight loop. Build buffer into your daily plan.
Length + tunnel limits
Most park roads accommodate RVs to 40 ft. The Dunraven Pass section between Tower-Roosevelt and Canyon has tight switchbacks — large Class A rigs over 35 ft should consider the alternate route via Norris.
Generator + propane
8am-8pm generator hours strictly enforced. Propane is available at the Old Faithful, Canyon, and Fishing Bridge stations during summer hours.

Park entrance fee
$35 per vehicle, valid 7 days. Annual America the Beautiful pass ($80) pays off across multiple parks.
Official sourceBackcountry permits
Required for overnight backcountry trips. Reserve through Recreation.gov starting January for the summer season — popular sites (Heart Lake, Shoshone Lake) book in weeks.
Official sourceBoat permit

Safety considerations
- Thermal area boardwalks save your life — water can exceed 200°F just inches below the crust. Visitors die almost every year from leaving the boardwalk.
- Lightning above tree-line is a routine summer killer. If you hear thunder, you are within strike distance. Descend immediately.
- Bear spray on every hike, no exceptions. Practice deploying it before leaving home.
- Heat-related illness is more common than people expect at 7,000-8,000 ft elevation. Drink water before you feel thirsty.
- Wildfire smoke can drift in from Pacific Northwest fires. Check airnow.gov daily; people with respiratory conditions should plan indoor backup activities.
No surprises
Honest pricing reality
What it actually costs
Summer campground rates: $32-86/night depending on hookups. Fishing Bridge full-hookup is $86/night and worth it for the only sewer-equipped sites. Gateway-town private RV parks (West Yellowstone, Gardiner, Cody) run $80-150/night with full hookups. Fuel in gateway towns runs $0.50-0.80/gal above national average.
Quick answers
Frequently asked
When should I book Yellowstone summer reservations?
Fishing Bridge RV Park books 6 months in advance via Recreation.gov. Standard campgrounds book 3-4 months out. Backcountry permits open in early January. For July-August trips, secure your reservations no later than April.
How long should I plan for a Yellowstone summer trip?
Minimum 4 full days. The figure-eight grand loop is 142 miles and takes 2-3 days to drive comprehensively. Add 1-2 days for hiking. Many RVers spend a week and don't see everything.
Are there full-hookup RV sites in Yellowstone?
Only Fishing Bridge RV Park has full hookups (water, electric, sewer). All other campgrounds are dry camping. Generators allowed 8am-8pm only.
What's the most-overlooked area of Yellowstone in summer?
The Bechler region (southwest corner, accessed via Idaho) sees less than 1% of park visitors. It's a hiker's paradise with dozens of waterfalls. No RV access — park outside and day-hike in.
What the NPS site won't tell you
Old Faithful erupts roughly every 90 minutes — but the BIG geyser to time is Steamboat in the Norris Basin. It's the world's tallest active geyser (300+ ft when major) and erupts unpredictably every few weeks. Check the NPS geyser-prediction page daily; if Steamboat is overdue, build your day around being at Norris.
