Fall foliage in the Smokies is spectacular — and brings the year's biggest crowd surge. Mid-October sees peak color at mid-elevations. The trade-off: campground reservations need to be booked 6+ months ahead. Elk rut peaks late September in Cataloochee Valley. Bears are in hyperphagia — extra calorie-focused. Strict food protocol. Weather is unpredictable in November but campgrounds quiet down significantly.
