(2) Trailer GVWR — max legal weight of the trailer alone, loaded with water + propane + gear + food. Stamped on trailer VIN tag.
(3) GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) — max legal combined weight of tow vehicle + trailer + cargo + passengers. Published in the tow vehicle's owner's manual, NOT on the door jamb.
(4) Tongue/Pin weight rating — the vertical load on the hitch ball or fifth-wheel pin. Hitch receiver class determines max (Class III: 800 lb, Class IV: 1,200 lb, Class V: 1,700 lb typical; fifth-wheel hitches: 2,500-4,500 lb).

Pin weight vs tongue weight — the 15-25% rule
Per the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) towing safety guide + NHTSA crash data:
Travel trailer tongue weight should be 10-15% of trailer Gross Vehicle Weight. Below 10% causes dangerous sway. Above 15% overloads the rear axle of the tow vehicle (lifting the front, reducing steering authority).
Fifth-wheel pin weight should be 15-25% of trailer GVW. Below 15% causes pin-pop and sway. Above 25% overloads the truck's rear axle — visible as a 'squat' lowering the truck's rear bumper by 4+ inches.
For a 12,000 lb fifth-wheel: pin weight 1,800-3,000 lb. For an 8,000 lb travel trailer: tongue weight 800-1,200 lb.

Weight distribution hitches — when you need one
Per the Society of Automotive Engineers and most US state tow regulations, a weight-distribution hitch (WDH) is REQUIRED for trailers over 50% of the tow vehicle's GVWR or over 5,000 lb GVW in most jurisdictions. The WDH uses spring bars to transfer some of the tongue weight from the rear axle of the tow vehicle to both the front axle (restoring steering authority) and the trailer's axles (improving braking balance).
Brands: Equal-i-zer ($400-700), Reese Strait-Line ($500-800), Andersen No-Sway ($800-1,000). The Equal-i-zer 4-point sway-control design is most common in the RV industry; the Andersen uses a chain-based system that's friction-based rather than spring-based.
Fifth-wheels do NOT use weight-distribution hitches. The pin-over-axle geometry already distributes weight optimally. Fifth-wheel hitches do require periodic lube + inspection of the kingpin coupling.
Trailer brakes — the rule rental hosts skip
Per FMCSA 49 CFR 393.42 and most state DOT regulations, trailers over 3,000 lb GVWR must have their own electric brakes activated by a controller in the tow vehicle. The controller (Tekonsha P3, CURT Echo, Redarc Tow-Pro) modulates brake intensity based on inertia.
Three controller types: time-delayed (cheapest, ~$60, less precise), inertia/proportional (best, ~$140-200, smooth modulation), and Bluetooth-wireless (newest, ~$250-400, no wiring through firewall). Inertia-proportional is the safe default for any meaningful trailer.
Adjust before each trip: lightly drive 30 mph on level pavement and engage the controller manually. Brakes should slow the rig firmly without locking. Too weak → adjust gain higher. Too strong (wheel lockup) → adjust gain lower.
Most rental travel trailers come with brakes ALREADY adjusted for the host's typical tow vehicle. Your tow vehicle has different brake feel — re-adjust before the highway.

Under-shared truth #1: 'max tow' ratings assume the tow vehicle is loaded with ONLY the driver (150 lb) and full fuel — no passengers, no cargo, no rooftop bag. Each additional 200 lb in the tow vehicle reduces the legal max tow by ~200 lb because GCWR is fixed.
Under-shared truth #2: payload (the truck's cargo-carrying capacity for passengers + cargo + tongue/pin weight) is often the binding constraint long before max tow. A truck rated 12,000 lb tow but only 1,500 lb payload can't legally pull a 10,000 lb fifth-wheel with 2,000 lb pin weight + driver + passenger.
Under-shared truth #3: published tow ratings for half-ton trucks (F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500) often require optional max-tow packages with upgraded radiators, transmission coolers, and rear axle ratios. Without the package, the 'standard' rating is 30-40% lower. Verify the specific build sheet of the truck you're using.
