Coconino is the second-largest county by area in the contiguous US (18,617 sq mi, behind only San Bernardino CA) and wraps the entire Grand Canyon NP corridor on both rims, all of the Navajo Nation's western quarter, the Hopi Reservation's northern boundary, and the high-altitude San Francisco Peaks rising to 12,633 ft at Humphreys — Arizona's high point. Flagstaff (population 76,831) sits at 6,909 ft and is the only Arizona city with a four-season climate; the elevation gives the city the lowest per-capita summer cooling-degree-day total of any state-largest city in the Southwest. North Rim's Grand Canyon Lodge access via AZ-67 across the Kaibab Plateau opens mid-May and closes mid-October due to elevation snowpack at 8,000+ ft.
