Dzil Nchaa Si An — 'Big Seated Mountain' in Western Apache — rises to 10,720 ft as the highest peak in southern Arizona and remains a sacred site to the San Carlos Apache Tribe, who have opposed the summit's astronomical development through a decades-long legal and political campaign that produced the 1989 Arizona-Idaho Conservation Act explicitly authorizing the observatory but also limiting it to a 24-acre footprint and prohibiting any expansion. The Mount Graham International Observatory operating today on the summit is a tri-party arrangement between the University of Arizona, the Vatican Observatory (which runs the 1.8-meter Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope, the largest dedicated Catholic-Church-owned scientific instrument in the world), and the Large Binocular Telescope consortium of Italian and German universities operating the 8.4-meter LBT — one of the highest-resolution ground-based optical telescopes anywhere on Earth.

The Swift Trail Scenic Byway (AZ-366) climbs 35 paved miles from Sonoran Desert at 3,000 ft elevation up to subalpine spruce-fir forest at 9,500 ft — the largest single-mountain elevation change on any Arizona state highway, equivalent to driving from Tucson to Vermont in altitudinal vegetation zones in a single afternoon. The upper byway above Wet Canyon closes seasonally with snowpack, typically from December through May per Coronado National Forest road-status updates. The Coronado National Forest's Safford Ranger District permits 14-day dispersed camping at signed pullouts along the lower byway. Roper Lake State Park 6 miles south of Safford accepts rigs to 40 ft with electric hookups across 64 sites and includes a natural hot-spring soaking tub at the lake's south end — one of two Arizona state parks with on-site geothermal soaking. Safford (county seat, population 9,566) anchors the Gila Valley cotton and chile-pepper agriculture economy.
