Canyon de Chelly National Monument is the only US national monument that is entirely owned by a Native American tribe — the Navajo Nation holds fee title to all surface and subsurface lands within the monument boundary per the 1931 NPS-Navajo cooperative administration agreement, and the NPS manages interpretation and visitor services without ever owning the underlying acreage. Any descent below the South Rim or North Rim trails (other than the 1.5-mile White House Ruin self-guided trail) requires a Navajo-authorized guide hired through the Sacred Canyon Lodge or one of the licensed Navajo-owned tour operators per NPS Compendium §1.5. Apache County's 11,198 sq mi wrap the Navajo Nation's southwestern half (Apache County is the southernmost county-level government partially-overlapping the Navajo Nation reservation, which spans 27,425 sq mi across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah — the largest US tribal reservation), the eastern White Mountains (peaking at Baldy Peak 11,420 ft inside the Fort Apache Reservation just south of the county line), and the northern Petrified Forest National Park unit (the Painted Desert Wilderness area extends into Apache County, with rigs to 40 ft accommodated on the main 28-mile park scenic loop road but no overnight RV camping inside the park per NPS Petrified Forest regulations).

St. Johns (population 3,506, the county seat) and Springerville (population 1,847) anchor the county's small-town infrastructure; full grocery, propane, and diesel exist in both. Cottonwood Campground inside Canyon de Chelly NM is administered by Navajo Parks and Recreation Department (not NPS) and accepts rigs to 35 ft on 96 first-come sites with no hookups; the campground is free per Navajo Parks tribal-park fee waiver for the cooperative-managed unit. Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest permits 14-day dispersed camping under standard USFS Region 3 regulations, with rigs to 30 ft accommodated on most forest roads off US-191 between Alpine and Hannagan Meadow. Lyman Lake State Park (Arizona State Parks) accepts rigs to 50 ft with electric hookups on 76 sites. The Coronado Trail Scenic Byway (US-191 from Springerville south to Clifton in Greenlee County, 123 miles, designated an All-American Road) carries 460 turns per the Arizona DOT highway log — the most twisty paved through-route in Arizona, and not recommended for rigs over 40 ft.
