No developed campground exists inside Petrified Forest — the park closes its gates at sunset, every visitor including RVers exits to the gateway towns of Holbrook or Chambers for overnight. The 28-mile main park road runs from I-40 in the north (Painted Desert) to US-180 in the south (Rainbow Forest) and is essentially a one-way scenic transit; backtracking adds 50+ miles via the interstate. RV staging from Holbrook is OK Garcia RV Park or the Holbrook KOA, both off I-40 within 25 miles of the north entrance. The park's elevation is 5,400-6,200 ft, summer afternoons run hot but overnight cools to 60s — and the petrified wood theft fines ($325+ per pound) are the most-enforced regulation in the system.
