First, the Flagstaff Winter Parking Ordinance (City Code §9-01-001-0003 E 7) bans on-street parking citywide from midnight to 7:00 a.m. between November 1 and April 1 — enforced whether snow is falling or not, with tow risk on snow days.

Second, the South Rim campground decision: Mather Campground caps motorhomes and trailers at 30 feet (sites 120, 121, 128, 172, 185 are the only ones that fit a true 30-footer), while Trailer Village RV Park, also at the South Rim, takes pull-throughs up to 50 feet with full hookups but books out a year ahead. If your rig is over 30 feet and you do not have a Trailer Village reservation, plan to base in Flagstaff and day-trip the 80 miles to the rim.

Add ADOT's posted "Chains or Snow Tires Required" sign that can flip on I-40 and US-180 anytime November through April, the 20-mile USFS dispersed-camping closure around the city, and the Route 66 Centennial events landing through 2026, and the arrival window matters more than the brochure ever will.

Mid-May through late September — overnight lows above freezing, I-40 free of chain restrictions, KOA and Black Bart's fully open, and Mather/Trailer Village still has cancellation availability if you watch Recreation.gov daily.

Season to skip

December through February — ADOT posts "Chains or Snow Tires Required" on I-40 and US-180 with little notice, Fort Tuthill is closed, the citywide midnight-7am street-parking ban is fully enforced, and Mather Campground operates first-come/first-served only with no water at sites.

What this means for you: Park an RV on a city street overnight Nov-Apr and you get a ticket; if it is snowing, you get a ticket and a tow. Use a paid park or a posted commercial lot.

Camping or vacation trailers, motorhomes, utility trailers, and boats may only be stored on private residential lots in the rear or interior side yard behind the building front; storage is anything longer than five days per month.

Dispersed camping is prohibited within a 20-mile radius of Flagstaff on Coconino National Forest land, in effect year-round.

What this means for you: You cannot legally boondock on FR 420 (Schultz Pass), most of FR 222 closest to town, or any forest road inside the 20-mile ring. Wing Mountain (~15-17 mi SW) and Pumphouse Wash (FR 237 toward Sedona) are the closest legal free dispersed options.

Your first hour in Flagstaff

Before you leave the lot

Fill propane at U-Haul Flagstaff (2750 E Butler Ave) before 5pm on Sunday — it is the only 7-day-a-week onboard refill in town; AmeriGas does not offer walk-in service.
If arriving Nov 1-Apr 1, do NOT park on any city street overnight — get into KOA, Black Bart's, or Woody Mountain before midnight to avoid the §9-01-001-0003 E 7 ticket-and-tow.

Within the first hour

Dump tanks at Speedway (2161 E Route 66) for free or Black Bart's ($8 non-guest) before driving the 80 miles to Grand Canyon — Mather has no hookups and Camper Services lines get long by 10am.
Check AZ 511 or azdot.gov for I-40 / US-180 chain restrictions if traveling Nov-Apr; studded tires are legal in Arizona Oct 1 - May 1.

Before bed

If your rig is over 30 feet and you do not already have a Trailer Village confirmation, cancel the Mather site — only sites 120, 121, 128, 172, 185 fit a true 30-footer and you will be turned away at check-in.
Diesel + DEF at Pilot/Flying J Travel Center I-40 Exit 198 (3404 E Butler Ave) — same exit as Black Bart's, the only pull-through truck-stop fuel close to downtown.

Before departure

If boondocking, drive past the 20-mile ring — Wing Mountain (FR 222) southwest or Pumphouse Wash (FR 237) toward Sedona; dispersed camping is banned year-round inside 20 miles of city limits.

The mistake renters make

Avoid this trap

Driving to Grand Canyon South Rim with a 31-40 foot motorhome or 5th wheel assuming you can squeeze into Mather Campground because the website says '30 feet max'. The 30-foot limit is hard — only sites 120, 121, 128, 172, and 185 actually fit a 30-footer, and rangers measure at check-in.

Turned away at the Mather gate after an 80-mile drive from Flagstaff, with no Trailer Village walk-up availability May-Oct (booked 13 months out). Your fallback is Ten-X Campground 9 miles south at $30/night IF it has space, or driving back toward Williams (~60 mi) — a wasted half-day plus another $50-90 in fuel.
