From late May through September, daytime highs sit above 110F and overnight lows often stay above 90F, which is why most Maricopa County regional park campgrounds quiet down and dispersed Tonto National Forest sites near Bartlett Reservoir become a tire-failure and battery-cooking risk rather than a free perk.

Layered on top of that: Phoenix City Code §36-140 prohibits any vehicle over three-quarter-ton chassis rating, plus every trailer, on residential streets except for active loading and unloading, and Arizona Revised Statutes back up a hard 72-hour cap on any public street.

When should I plan my trip to Phoenix?

Best season to come

November through mid-April. Daytime highs sit 65-80F, overnight lows 40-55F, almost no rain. Trade-off: this is also peak snowbird and event season, so reservations must be in hand 4-12 months ahead.

Season to skip

June through mid-September. Daytime highs routinely exceed 110F and frequently reach 115-118F; overnight lows stay above 90F. RV A/C units cannot drop interior below ~95F; tire blowouts, battery cooking, and refrigerator failure are common. Many regional park campgrounds run at near-zero occupancy.

Parking ordinances that bite RVs

No vehicle with rated chassis capacity over three-fourths of a ton, nor any tractor, semi-trailer, trailer, or bus, may stand or park on a local, collector, or arterial street in a residential zone except during active loading or unloading.

What this means for you: Most Class A, Class C, and travel trailers exceed the 3/4-ton chassis threshold and cannot legally park on residential streets at any time. Citations are issued on complaint, in accidents, or when a hazard exists.

Your first hour in Phoenix

Before you leave the lot

Confirm your reservation paperwork is loaded on your phone before arrival — Lost Dutchman and Maricopa County parks check arrival at the gate and same-day walk-ins during snowbird season are near-zero.
If arriving Sunday, fill propane at U-Haul 19th & Bell (17030 N 19th Ave) — open 9am-5pm Sundays; most other propane dealers in the metro close Sunday.

Within the first hour

If arriving on diesel, plan the fuel stop at Flying J #611 (6700 W Latham St, I-10 Exit 137) — only true high-clearance pull-through fuel island inside the Phoenix metro.
Dump tanks before checking into any non-hookup site — Pilot/Flying J #611 dump is $15 and 24/7; Cave Creek Regional Park dump is free with camper registration.

Before bed

Never stage the rig on a residential street for more than 'active loading' — §36-140 citations start at $20 and stack $5/day, and a 72-hour street tag can lead to a $400-$700 tow.
Between June 1 and September 15, verify your A/C runs at 50A shore power for a full hour before sundown — at 110F+ a marginal compressor will not recover overnight.

Before departure

Check Maricopa County Parks 2026 fee schedule before paying at the gate — fees were adjusted effective January 1, 2026 and printed signage may lag the new amounts.
If attending the WM Phoenix Open or a NASCAR weekend, reserve a metro RV park (Desert's Edge, Pioneer) — TPC Scottsdale and Phoenix Raceway day lots do not allow RV overnight parking.

Assuming you can street-park a Class A or trailer overnight in a Phoenix residential neighborhood while waiting for a campground check-in.
