Boundary Waters overnight travel is permit-controlled
Recreation.gov — permits ↗Overnight paddle trips into the BWCAW require a quota permit during the summer season, reserved through Recreation.gov and tied to a specific entry point and date. Popular entry points are taken within days of reservations opening. Day use also requires a permit at most entry points, though it is not quota-limited in the same way. Renting a canoe does not get you a permit — those are two separate bookings.
Minnesota licenses watercraft, including larger paddlecraft
Minnesota DNR — boating ↗Minnesota's watercraft licensing rules reach beyond motorboats: non-motorised craft above a length threshold carry a watercraft licence, and the licence travels with the hull. On a rental that is the host's responsibility, and the decal should be on the boat when you collect it. If it is not, ask before you launch.
Invasive species: drain everything before you leave the access
Minnesota DNR ↗Minnesota's aquatic-invasive-species law requires draining water from watercraft and equipment and removing drain plugs during transport, and removing visible plants and animals before leaving a water access. - Months, if you want a specific entry point in July or August. Overnight permits are quota-limited and released on a published schedule, and the well-known entry points go quickly. The canoe itself is the easy part; the permit is the constraint.
- When is ice-out in Minnesota?
- It varies by latitude and by year — the far north typically clears weeks later than the Twin Cities lakes, and a late spring can push the northern lakes into May. Any early-season paddling plan should have a fallback further south.
- Do I need a licence for a rented canoe?
- You do not need an operator licence to paddle. The boat itself may need a watercraft licence under Minnesota's rules, and on a rental that decal is the host's responsibility — check that it is on the hull when you collect it.
