Lake Tahoe runs a watercraft inspection programme
Tahoe watercraft inspections ↗To keep invasive mussels out of the lake, Tahoe operates a mandatory inspection and decontamination programme for motorised watercraft, with self-certification and clean-drain-dry stations for non-motorised paddlecraft. Inspection stations are seasonal and have set hours. If your gear rental includes anything trailered, build the inspection stop into the day rather than discovering it at the ramp.
Class 3 e-bikes: 16 and over, helmet required
California Vehicle Code ↗California defines three e-bike classes in the Vehicle Code. Class 3 machines — pedal assist up to 28 mph — carry a minimum operator age of 16 and a helmet requirement, and are generally kept off multi-use paths where Class 1 and 2 are allowed. The class is a property of the bike, so it should be stated on the listing before you book a rider under 16 onto one.
Sierra passes and chain control decide winter logistics
Caltrans road conditions ↗Tioga, Sonora and Ebbetts passes close with the first sustained snow and typically do not reopen until late spring. On the highways that stay open, Caltrans imposes chain requirements at short notice, and a two-wheel-drive rental without chains can be turned back. If your plan depends on crossing the Sierra, check the current status before booking non-refundable nights on the far side.
- Can a 15-year-old ride a rented e-bike in California?
