Michigan has more freshwater shoreline than any other state, and almost all of the good paddling is on water that never really warms up. Non-motorised canoes and kayaks are not registered
Michigan DNR — boating ↗Michigan requires registration for motorised watercraft, and non-motorised canoes and kayaks used privately are outside that requirement. The moment a motor — including a small electric one — goes on a hull, the registration rule applies. If a rental includes a trolling motor, confirm the registration is current with the host.
Cold water is the actual hazard on the Great Lakes
US Coast Guard — boating safety ↗Lake Superior surface temperatures commonly stay below 60°F through much of the summer, and cold-water immersion can incapacitate a strong swimmer in minutes. Backcountry overnights at the national lakeshores need a permit

- It is world-class paddling and it is genuinely serious water. The surface stays cold through most of the season, the cliff sections have long stretches with no landing, and conditions build quickly. Match the boat to open water, wear the life jacket rather than stowing it, and treat a guided trip as the sensible option for a first visit.
- When is the best time to ride in the Upper Peninsula?
- Late summer into early October. The trails have dried, the biting insects that define June and early July are finished, and the hardwood colour arrives in late September. Snow can close the season in November.
- Do I need to register a rented kayak?
