Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the United States — established by the New York Legislature in 1885 under the 'Niagara Reservation' name and designed in part by Frederick Law Olmsted (the same landscape architect who designed Manhattan's Central Park and the Boston Emerald Necklace). The reservation predates the federal state-park concept by 13 years and the National Park Service itself by 31, making it a foundational precedent for the entire US public-parks system per the NY State Office of Parks historical record. Erie County is the second-most-populous county in New York (954,236 per 2020 Census, behind only Kings/Brooklyn) and covers 1,043 sq mi from the Pennsylvania line north along the Lake Erie shoreline to the Niagara County boundary. Buffalo (population 278,349, the county seat) anchors the western-NY metro economy — the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, the BlueCross BlueShield of WNY headquarters, and the resurgent Larkinville and Canalside redevelopment districts drive the city's post-industrial transition narrative.

The actual Niagara Falls (Horseshoe and American Falls combined) are in Niagara County 20 miles north — Erie holds the upper-river approach, the I-190 South Grand Island Bridge, and the South Park Lake at Frederick Law Olmsted's Tifft Nature Preserve (a 264-acre urban wetland restoration on a former municipal landfill). Four Mile Creek State Park, 4 miles north of the falls along the lower Niagara River in Niagara County, accepts rigs up to 40 ft with electric and water hookups (266 sites, ReserveAmerica reservations) and is the closest state-park RV-friendly base for both Niagara visitors and travelers staging the Peace Bridge or Rainbow Bridge Toronto crossing. Inside Erie County itself, Evangola State Park on Lake Erie (35 miles south of Buffalo) accepts rigs to 40 ft with electric hookups and is the canonical Lake Erie shoreline RV base.
