Forty-six Adirondack peaks rise above 4,000 ft inside Essex County's slice of the 6.1-million-acre Adirondack Park — the largest state-managed park in the contiguous US, governed since 1894 under the New York Constitution's 'forever wild' clause (Article XIV Section 1), the only state-park land in the country protected at constitutional rank. Roughly 110,000 year-round residents live on private inholdings inside park boundaries, a land-tenure arrangement that produces a hybrid town/wilderness regulatory mesh: Adirondack Park Agency (APA) zoning controls every parcel split and every new structure exceeding 1,250 sq ft per Executive Law §809. Mount Marcy at 5,344 ft is the New York high point; the Eastern High Peaks Wilderness Zone surrounding it bans dogs, group sizes over 8, and any camping above 4,000 ft per DEC 6 NYCRR §190.13.

Lake Placid (population 2,338) hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics — the only village in the world to host the Winter Games twice — and the Mt. Van Hoevenberg bobsled run and the Olympic ski-jump complex still operate as paid public-tour venues run by the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority. RV access to the High Peaks is narrow: Wilmington Notch State Campground on NY-86 along the West Branch Ausable accepts rigs to 40 ft, opens Memorial Day weekend, closes mid-October, books out 9 months ahead via Reserveamerica. The Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway (open mid-May to mid-October) lets passenger vehicles climb to 4,610 ft for $20/vehicle; the upper toll road excludes trailers over 28 ft total length per DEC posting. Essex County's I-87 (Northway) Exit 30-34 corridor carries most park entry; fuel + propane density drops to one station per 18 miles north of Lake George until Plattsburgh.
