A traveler's read on Warren County

Thomas Jefferson stopped at Lake George on his 1791 northern tour with James Madison and wrote in a 31 May letter that it was 'without comparison the most beautiful water I ever saw' — a marketing line Lake George tourism has not stopped using in the 235 years since, and one of the few Jeffersonian endorsements still printed verbatim on chamber-of-commerce brochures. The lake runs 32 miles north-south, 196 ft maximum depth, and drains north into Lake Champlain via the La Chute River at Ticonderoga — making it one of the few major Eastern lakes that drains toward the St. Lawrence rather than the Hudson. Warren County wraps the lake's southern two-thirds, the Luzerne Mountains to the west, and the Glens Falls urban anchor (population 14,318) at the I-87 Exit 18 corridor.

Three contiguous state parks ring the southern shore — Million Dollar Beach (day-use only), Hearthstone Point Campground (250 sites accepting rigs to 40 ft, electric on most loops), and Rogers Rock Campground at the lake's northwest corner (321 sites, no hookups, opens 1 May per NY State Parks calendar). The combination is the densest cluster of state-managed RV-friendly camping in the New York Adirondack region. I-87 (the Northway) is the canonical Albany-to-Montreal corridor; Lake George Village (population 906) at Exit 21 is the only year-round commercial town directly on the southern shore, with most lodging and amusement-park traffic concentrated in a 6-block grid along US-9. The Million Dollar Beach swim area enforces the state's strictest invasive-species boat-wash protocol per Lake George Park Commission rules — every trailered boat is hand-inspected at the boat-launch entrance.
