Snowmobiles are the off-road winter category — December through March, depending on snowpack. Permit-and-state-specific. Avalanche risk on backcountry trails; trail snowmobiling on groomed networks is the lower-risk entry point.

What it is
A snowmobile is a single- or two-rider motorized vehicle on skis (front) and a tracked rear belt. Engine sizes 600cc-1000cc are typical for trail riding; backcountry mountain sleds (Polaris RMK Khaos, Ski-Doo Summit X) use the larger displacement.
Trail sleds (Polaris Indy, Ski-Doo Renegade, Arctic Cat ZR) are tuned for groomed snowmobile trail networks. Mountain sleds are tuned for unbroken backcountry powder — different skill set, different risk profile.
Two-up sleds with a rear seat exist; most rentals are single-rider with a pillion option.

Permit reality (per state)
- MI: state snowmobile trail permit $52/year. Required for use of the groomed trail network.
- MT: state snowmobile registration $43/year for non-residents. State trail pass $20/year.
- WY: state snowmobile permit $25/year non-resident. Yellowstone in-park commercial guide required (DIY not permitted).
- AK: no statewide trail permit, but local trail-system fees apply.
Safety reality (honest)
- Avalanche awareness is mandatory for backcountry mountain sledding. PickRV requires riders on mountain-sled rentals to carry an avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe, and to have completed AIARE 1 or equivalent training.
- Carbon monoxide poisoning is a documented sled-trip fatality vector — never warm up a sled inside an enclosed garage or trailer.
- Hypothermia is the silent risk on multi-hour rides. Heated grips, heated visor, and proper layering are not optional in -10F+ wind chill.

FAQs
Can I ride a snowmobile in Yellowstone?
Only with a commercial guided tour. DIY snowmobile rentals operate on USFS and state trail networks outside the park. PickRV does not currently broker in-park commercial snow-coach or guided sled tours.
Is avalanche training required?
For trail rentals on groomed networks (MI, MN, WI, NY), no. For backcountry mountain-sled rentals near Cooke City MT, the host requires AIARE 1 or equivalent. We will not waive this for any reason.
What about wind chill safety?
Most groomed-trail rentals include heated grips and heated visor. Layering and proper insulated bib + jacket are your responsibility. Hosts in northern climates stock loaner gear at additional cost.
