OHV Permit Guide — Per-State OHV Sticker Rules on PickRV

OHV stickers and registrations fund trail maintenance, signage, ranger patrols, and access negotiations with private landowners. Money in equals money for trails.

The fees are low ($10-$50/year per rig in most states) and the consequences of riding without are real — citations from BLM and USFS rangers, plus loss of insurance coverage on the host's policy.

PickRV's rentals come with the appropriate sticker for the staging state. If you cross into a non-reciprocal state, you (or the host) need additional compliance. The listing surfaces which states the rig is compliant for.

Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming honor each other's current OHV stickers in most cases. A rig with a current sticker from any of these states can legally ride in the others without additional permits.

Caveats: California is NOT in the reciprocal block (CA uses a separate Green/Red Sticker system). Montana is partially reciprocal with Idaho and Wyoming but requires non-resident permits otherwise.

Verify the specific state-pair before crossing borders. PickRV's listing tells you the rig's home state and what is recognized.

California uses Green Sticker (CARB-compliant) or Red Sticker (non-CARB-compliant) on OHVs. Both stickers cost approximately $50 for two years.

Red Sticker is restricted to specific months at most SVRAs and BLM areas — typically October-May.

Non-residents need a CA non-resident OHV permit ($30) to ride a non-CA-stickered OHV in California. Renting from a CA host who already maintains CA stickers avoids this complexity.

West Virginia: $26/year WV state OHV permit on the rig, plus Hatfield-McCoy Trail Permit ($26/day per rig or $35/year per rider).

Michigan: $26.25/year ORV License plus $10/year ORV Trail Permit. Winter snowmobile use requires separate $52/year Snowmobile Trail Permit.

No reciprocity with Western states — eastern systems are self-contained.

Alaska does not require a state-wide OHV sticker. Local trail-system fees apply at some destinations (Knik Glacier corridor private easements).

Hatcher Pass Alaska State Parks: free for designated ATV use.

Denali Highway: free for dispersed BLM OHV use.

PickRV hosts can normally issue or facilitate the permit at pickup if you do not have one. There may be a small handling fee.

Do not ride without the permit. The fine is typically $100-$500 and the host's insurance coverage will not pay for a citation incurred during a non-compliant ride.
