What it is
An ATV (all-terrain vehicle) is a four-wheel off-road vehicle with a saddle-style seat, handlebar controls, and shaft- or chain-drive. The rider sits astride and shifts body weight into turns.
Modern ATVs range from 250cc (entry / kid-sized) to 1000cc (Yamaha Grizzly EPS, Polaris Sportsman XP 1000). Two-up ATVs (Yamaha Grizzly 700 EPS SE with rear seat) exist but are less common than UTV side-by-sides for two riders.
ATVs handle narrower trails than UTVs and tip over more easily. They are the right tool for forest singletrack and tight switchbacks; they are the wrong tool for high-speed dune running.

Permit reality (per state)
- WV Hatfield-McCoy: same $50 day pass + $26 trail permit as UTV. ATV does not get a discount.
- OH Wayne NF: USFS OHV permit $5/day or $25/year. Required on all designated OHV trails.
- TN Cherokee NF: free for USFS-designated OHV trails; state non-resident registration may apply for trailered ATVs.
- UT Sand Hollow: state park day-use $20/vehicle plus the standard UT OHV sticker on the ATV.
Safety reality (honest)
- ATV rollover injury is the most common off-road ER admission per CPSC data. Body-shift turning is a learned skill; first-timers underestimate the effort.
- Children under 16 should not operate adult-sized ATVs (engine > 90cc). PickRV's age minimum for any ATV rental is 18.
- Helmet, eye protection, gloves, sturdy boots, and long-sleeve riding gear are not negotiable. Most ATV-incident injuries are abrasions from low-speed slides.

FAQs
Are ATVs harder to ride than UTVs?
For first-timers, yes. ATV requires body-shift turning (you lean into the turn while pushing the inside grip down). UTV uses automotive-style steering, which most riders already know.
Can I bring a passenger on the ATV?
Only on two-up ATVs explicitly built for it (Yamaha Grizzly 700 SE, Honda Rancher 2-up). Riding double on a single-seat ATV violates the manufacturer's warning and most state laws.
What's the minimum age?
PickRV's minimum for any ATV rental is 18 with a valid driver license. State laws differ for ownership; we apply the strictest interpretation for renter safety.
