Off-Road Trail Rating Guide — Beginner to Expert on PickRV

BLM Moab rates trails 1-10 using a published rubric that includes substrate (slickrock vs sand vs hardpack), obstacle size, off-camber severity, and consequence (exposure).

USFS rates trails more loosely — 'easy', 'more difficult', 'most difficult' is the standard USFS three-band — with significant variation between forests.

California State Parks SVRAs use a green-blue-black-double-black system borrowed from skiing.

4WD clubs (the Pritchett Club in Moab, Telluride Off-Road Club) publish their own crowd-sourced ratings that often diverge from agency ratings.

PickRV reconciles these into a 1-10 four-band rubric documented below. The number on the listing is the host's good-faith assessment using this rubric, cross-checked against the trail system's published rating.

Surface: hardpack dirt, gravel, or smooth slickrock with no loose material accumulation.

Obstacles: none above 6 inches. Water crossings absent or below 6 inches deep.

Skill: any rider who can drive a car on a dirt road. Low-range not required.

Vehicle: any 4WD or UTV stock from the factory.

Examples: Schnebly Hill Road (Sedona AZ), most of Hayes Creek easy loops (CO), Indian Ridge intro (Hatfield-McCoy WV).

Surface: loose gravel, mild sand, intermittent slickrock with grip variations.

Obstacles: occasional 6-12 inch ledges or rocks. Water crossings 6-18 inches.

Skill: previous off-road experience helpful but not mandatory. Comfortable picking lines through obstacle gardens.

Vehicle: 4WD or UTV stock-grade with low-range engaged. All-terrain tires recommended.

Examples: Fins & Things (Moab UT), Broken Arrow excluding Devil's Staircase (Sedona AZ), most Pinnacle Creek loops (Hatfield-McCoy WV).

Surface: extended loose substrate, moderate sand, slickrock with steep transitions.

Obstacles: regular 12-24 inch ledges or boulders. Water crossings 18-36 inches.

Skill: multiple prior trips in stock 4WD or UTV. Comfortable spotting and being spotted through obstacles.

Vehicle: 4WD or UTV with locking differentials (front and rear preferred). Skid plates recommended. Recovery gear (winch, straps, MAXTRAX) on the rig.

Examples: Hells Revenge (Moab UT — minus the Hell's Gate optional section), Imogene Pass (Telluride CO), Box Canyon (Florence AZ).

Surface: extended steep slickrock, deep loose substrate, severe off-camber.

Obstacles: 24+ inch ledges, boulder gardens requiring articulation, water crossings 36+ inches.

Skill: years of off-road experience. Comfortable winching, spotting, and being spotted through consequence-laden obstacles.

Vehicle: 4WD or UTV with front and rear lockers, 33+ inch tires (often 35-37 inch), aftermarket bumpers and rock sliders, winch, recovery gear.

Examples: Black Bear Pass (Telluride CO, 9-10, one-way descent), Pritchett Canyon (Moab UT, 9), Cliffhanger (Moab UT, 8-9), Cabinet Mountains backcountry (Montana, 8-9).

Every off-road listing carries a 1-10 trail rating. The host sets the rating using this rubric and the trail system's published difficulty.

Hosts will not rent a rig for trails rated above the renter's stated skill level. We treat this as a safety gate, not a marketing constraint.

If you are uncertain about a trail's rating, the host's pre-pickup conversation is the right time to ask. Hosts staged at named trail systems know the routes intimately.
