Boondocking FAQ
Is boondocking legal?
Yes. Dispersed camping is legal on most BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and National Forest land unless specifically posted otherwise. Always check for fire restrictions, seasonal closures, or permit requirements before camping.
How long can I stay in one spot?
The standard limit is 14 days on BLM and National Forest land. After 14 days, you must move at least 25 miles from your previous campsite. Some areas have shorter limits (7 days in popular areas). Long Term Visitor Areas (LTVAs) in Arizona and California allow season-long stays for a permit fee.
Do I need a generator for boondocking?
Not necessarily. Many boondockers use solar panels and lithium batteries instead. A 200-400 watt solar system with a 200Ah lithium battery bank can power lights, phone charging, a water pump, and a 12V fridge indefinitely. A generator is helpful for running AC, a microwave, or charging batteries on cloudy days.
Is boondocking safe?
Generally yes. The biggest risks are mechanical breakdowns in remote areas, extreme weather, and wildlife encounters. Always tell someone your plans, carry a satellite communicator, check weather forecasts, and know your vehicle's limits on rough roads.
Can I boondock in a rental RV?
Check with your rental company. Some prohibit off-pavement driving or camping outside established campgrounds. PickRV hosts who allow boondocking will clearly state it in their listing. Always confirm with your host before taking a rental RV off-road.
Where is the best boondocking in the US?
The western US has the most options due to vast BLM and National Forest land. Top areas include Quartzsite AZ (winter), Alabama Hills CA, Moab UT, Coconino National Forest (Sedona/Flagstaff AZ), and Ocala National Forest FL. The eastern US has fewer options but Ocala, Pisgah, and Daniel Boone National Forests allow dispersed camping.
How do I find water while boondocking?
Fill up your fresh water tank before heading out. Many gas stations, rest stops, and campground water spigots allow free water fills. Dedicated RV water fill stations exist in popular boondocking areas (Quartzsite, Ehrenberg). In a pinch, a quality water filter can treat water from streams and springs.
What about internet and cell service?
