Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina covers over 500,000 acres of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, including some of the highest peaks east of the Mississippi. Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the forest in areas not specifically closed. Forest roads along the Blue Ridge Parkway and in the Shining Rock Wilderness area provide access to free camping among hardwood forests with stunning mountain views.
Waterfalls are a major draw — the forest contains over 250 named waterfalls including Looking Glass Falls, Sliding Rock, and the triple cascade of Triple Falls.

Fall foliage (mid-October) on the Blue Ridge Parkway is world-class. Arrive midweek to avoid crowds.
Black bears are common. Use bear canisters or hang food bags 12+ feet high and 6 feet from tree trunk.
