Red River Gorge area is the most popular. Dispersed camping is allowed but some areas require permits — check at the Gladie Visitor Center.

The forest is lush and green but also very humid in summer. Expect insects and prepare accordingly.

Fall foliage (mid-October) is spectacular and the best time to visit.

Some forest roads are steep and narrow. Check conditions before taking a large RV off the main roads.
