Daniel Boone National Forest is one of the best options for free dispersed camping in the eastern United States. Spanning 708,000 acres across 21 counties in eastern Kentucky, the forest features dramatic sandstone arches, cliffs, and the famous Red River Gorge. Dispersed camping is permitted in most areas at least 300 feet from roads, trails, and water sources.
The lush hardwood forest provides shade and privacy that western desert sites can't match.

Red River Gorge area is the most popular. Dispersed camping is allowed but some areas require permits — check at the Gladie Visitor Center.
The forest is lush and green but also very humid in summer. Expect insects and prepare accordingly.
Fall foliage (mid-October) is spectacular and the best time to visit.
Some forest roads are steep and narrow. Check conditions before taking a large RV off the main roads.
