Anza-Borrego is unique among California state parks in allowing free dispersed camping within park boundaries — no reservation, no fee, no permit. At 600,000 acres, it's the largest state park in the contiguous US. The surrounding BLM land adds even more free camping options.
Desert wildflower blooms in spring (February-April) attract thousands of visitors. The quirky desert town of Borrego Springs provides services and has a collection of giant metal sculptures scattered throughout.

Free camping is allowed anywhere within the park that is at least one car length off a road — no permit needed. This is rare for California.

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 110°F. Visit November through April only.
