The 5 parks — quick comparison + drive distances

Utah's Mighty 5 cluster within a 300-mile loop in southeast Utah. Order matters: most efficient loop is Zion → Bryce → Capitol Reef → Canyonlands → Arches, ending in Moab.

Drive times: Las Vegas → Zion (2.5 hr), Zion → Bryce (1.5 hr), Bryce → Capitol Reef (2.5 hr), Capitol Reef → Canyonlands Needles (2 hr), Canyonlands → Arches (1 hr), Arches → Moab (10 min).

Arches timed-entry — the 2026 booking calendar

Arches NPS implemented timed-entry reservations May - September 2022, extended through 2026. Reservation required for entry between 7 AM - 4 PM. Reservation slots open 3 months in advance at 8 AM Mountain Time on Recreation.gov.

Demand exceeds supply by 5-10x. Slots typically clear within 5-15 minutes of opening. Set 3 calendar reminders: 3 months out (book), 1 month out (verify), 1 day before (download QR code + screenshot).

Zion shuttle — when it runs, RV parking outside the canyon

Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles March 1 - November 30 (shuttle-only). Shuttles run every 10-15 minutes from the visitor center, 7 AM - 7 PM.

RV parking: Zion has very limited RV parking. Most RV-ers stay at Watchman Campground (NPS, 30 ft max, $30/night) inside the park, OR at one of the private RV resorts in Springdale (immediately outside the south entrance, walking distance to shuttle).

Capitol Reef gravel — Scenic Drive + Cathedral Valley loop

Capitol Reef has 2 scenic drives: the paved 7.9-mi Scenic Drive (RV-friendly, all rigs) and the unpaved 57-mi Cathedral Valley Loop (high-clearance + 4WD strongly recommended, NOT RV-friendly).

For most RVs: stick to the Scenic Drive + Fruita historic district. Fruita has the only NPS-operated fruit orchards (peaches, pears, apricots, apples — pick-your-own seasonally, free for in-orchard consumption, paid for take-away).

Bryce dark-sky + winter access

Bryce Canyon is the second-best-rated dark-sky national park in the US (per International Dark-Sky Association). Astronomy ranger programs run May - October, 9 PM nightly. Telescope viewings of Saturn, Jupiter, moon, deep-sky objects.

Winter (Dec - Mar): Sunset + Sunrise Points stay open + plowed; Inspiration + Bryce Points often closed. Snow + ice underfoot. Crowds drop 90% vs summer; sunrise photography is at peak.

Canyonlands — three districts, three completely different parks

Canyonlands is the largest NPS unit in Utah (337,000 acres) split into 3 districts: Island in the Sky (north, mesa overlooks), Needles (south, hiking + technical climbing), Maze (west, backcountry 4WD).

Island in the Sky is the only RV-friendly district. Needles requires 4WD for access roads; Maze is backcountry-permit-only with high-clearance 4WD required.

Dispersed camping outside the parks — Sand Flats, BLM

Inside-park camping is limited. Outside-park BLM + state-trust land offers massive dispersed-camping inventory.

Best dispersed: Sand Flats Recreation Area outside Moab (BLM-managed, $10/vehicle/night, 7-night limit, 138 sites), Hatch Point area outside Canyonlands (free dispersed BLM), Willow Springs area outside Arches (free dispersed BLM, fills weekends).

What Utah Office of Tourism marketing doesn't tell you

The under-shared truth: April + October are dramatically better RV months than June - August. Daytime temps 65-80°F, no thunderstorm season, crowds 50-60% of summer peak, timed-entry windows easier to book. Summer (June - August) is hostile to anything but early-morning + late-evening hiking due to 100°F+ midday heat.

Second under-shared truth: Capitol Reef is the under-visited gem. 1.4M visitors/year (vs 4.6M Zion + 1.8M Arches) but equal scenic payoff. Plan a 3-night stop instead of the standard 1-day pass-through.

Slot canyon flash-flood weather windows

Per the NPS Backcountry Safety guidance at nps.gov/zion + the NWS Salt Lake City Forecast Office (weather.gov/slc), slot-canyon hiking in the Mighty 5 region carries real flash-flood risk during the July-September monsoon. The Subway, Pine Creek, Mystery Canyon, and Buckskin Gulch — among the most-photographed slot canyons in Utah — have killed multiple groups in the past two decades, all during monsoon-season storms with forecasts predicting precipitation upstream of the canyon entrance.

The protocol: check the NPS slot-canyon flash-flood probability rating posted daily at every Zion and Bryce visitor center between June 15 and September 30. The rating uses NWS forecast data + canyon-specific watershed analysis. Ratings of 'High' or 'Expected' cancel all slot-canyon descents per NPS policy. Per the National Weather Service, weather > 30 miles upstream from a slot canyon entrance can produce flash floods inside the canyon with no rain falling at the canyon itself — the cliché of 'sunny day flash flood' is real and lethal.

Backcountry permits + ranger-station check-in protocol

Beyond timed-entry vehicle reservations, Utah's Mighty 5 backcountry hiking requires permits for many of the iconic destinations. Per Recreation.gov + the NPS permit pages: Zion's The Subway (top-down + bottom-up routes), Angels Landing (chains section), and Mystery Canyon require permits. Bryce's Riggs Spring Loop overnight requires backcountry permits. Canyonlands' Maze district requires backcountry permits for any overnight stay. Capitol Reef's Cathedral Valley requires no permit but ranger sign-in is requested for 4WD safety tracking.

Angels Landing permits in particular shifted to a lottery system in April 2022 and continue through 2026 per nps.gov/zion. For any backcountry overnight (Canyonlands Maze, Bryce overnight), ranger check-in at the trailhead-nearest visitor center is required + included in permit terms. Rangers verify gear list (water capacity, navigation, GPS, satellite communicator), confirm weather forecast acknowledgment, and log expected return date for search + rescue protocols. The Search + Rescue cost-recovery rule (per various Utah county sheriff policies) means failing to check in on return triggers a fee-billed rescue if SAR resources deploy looking for you.
