Onan and Generac RV generator specs — the numbers that matter

Onan (Cummins) RV QD 2800 / 4000 series and Generac 3300 / 6500 portable or built-in units are the most common in the rental fleet. The critical spec for soft-start pairing is not just rated watts but the surge capacity and how the inverter or governor handles the sudden load. A 2800 W Onan can deliver ~3000-3200 W surge for a few seconds; a 2000 W Honda inverter is limited closer to 2200-2400 W. The soft start brings the AC surge inside that window.

Soft start is not magic. It reduces inrush on the compressor motor only. If you have two ACs, both need their own unit (or a dual model). At high altitude or high ambient the generator derates and the AC load increases; the margin the soft start buys you shrinks.

Some older Onan Emerald or Microlite units have very limited surge and may still struggle even with a soft start. Always verify the generator model on the host's spec sheet.
