Step does not deploy when door opens
Most modern electric steps deploy on a door-switch trigger. If the step stays retracted, suspect (a) door switch failure, (b) motor seizure, (c) blown fuse, (d) low house-battery voltage. Don't attempt to step out into the high blind drop.
Step deploys but binds, grinds, or makes intermittent noise

1. Use the manual override switch BEFORE forcing a stuck step
Every Lippert / Kwikee electric step has a manual override toggle, usually inside the basement compartment near the step controller. Cycle the switch to extend / retract before assuming the motor is dead. The door switch can be the failure point rather than the motor.

Electric steps will not deploy at low DC voltage. If the rig has been sitting without shore power, charge the house battery and retest. A multimeter at the step's power lead confirms whether the issue is power delivery or the step itself.

Step circuits are fused at the 12 V distribution panel. A blown fuse is a $0.50 fix and often the root cause. Per Kwikee service literature, replace with the OEM-spec fuse rating only — a higher rating turns a fuse-protected fault into a wiring fire risk.

Lippert publishes a manual-retract procedure (typically disconnecting the motor wire and folding the step manually). Tie or strap the step in retracted position with a rated tie-down before driving any distance.

Prevention
Level the rig before opening the door
An unlevel rig delivers an oblique step that twists ankles. Level laterally with chocks or auto-leveling jacks BEFORE the first person steps out. Per RVIA pre-trip checklists, leveling is the first arrival task for safety reasons, not just refrigerator function.
Add a third step or handrail at every site
Most rigs deliver a high last-step rise (12-15 inches) that is fine for adults under 50 and dangerous for everyone else. A Stromberg-Carlson or MORryde solid step / scissor step bridges the gap; a clamp-on handrail (Stromberg-Carlson 'Stable-Lite', similar OEMs) gives a grab point for the door pull.
Light the step approach
A motion-activated puck light or step light at the threshold and a clip-on flashlight at the step turns a night egress from blind-trip into routine. Many rigs ship with a porch light at the door; verify it works and replace bulbs before trips.
Train kids and pets on the step route
Kids carrying things often miss the step. Establish a 'hands-on-the-handrail, one-foot-at-a-time' rule. For dogs, a ramp (PetSafe, Solvit) is safer than the step for elderly or short-legged dogs whose joints take repeated drop impact.
Annual step service per OEM spec
Lippert / Kwikee publish service intervals — pivot lubrication, motor inspection, door switch test, fuse replacement. RVDA-certified technicians (rvda.org) follow the OEM service intervals. Annual at minimum; more often for full-time use.
Replace anti-slip tape every season
Grip-tape adhesive degrades from UV and temperature cycling. Peel and replace every spring before high-traffic season. 3M Safety-Walk and equivalent tapes are $15-25 a roll.

When the step fails retracted, the first person out faces a 24-30 inch drop to ground with door-frame handhold only. Sit on the threshold and lower yourself out rather than stepping blind. Carry a portable step in a basement bay for exactly this scenario.
Door switch failure is more common than motor failure
Most 'step won't deploy' calls turn out to be a $30 door switch with worn contacts, not a $250 motor. Test the switch with a multimeter (continuity test as the door opens) before ordering motor parts.

My electric step won't deploy — is the motor dead?
Probably not.
