Visible flame at the cooktop, refrigerator coils, or wheel wells
USFA NFIRS data lists cooking, electrical / wiring, and engine area / running gear among the top RV fire origins. Wheel-well fire often shows as smoke between the wheels before flame.
Heavy black smoke or burning-plastic smell
Polystyrene wall-board and polyurethane mattresses release dense black smoke and hydrogen cyanide as they pyrolyze — toxic in seconds.
Refrigerator ammonia smell while driving or parked uneven
Norcold and Dometic absorption refrigerators have a documented history of NHTSA recalls for cooling-unit boil-overs that ignited adjacent insulation. Smell the ammonia, shut off the fridge at the LP valve, pull over, and inspect.
Warm or scorched cord at the shore-power inlet
A loose pedestal contact heats the male plug. Touch the inlet after each connection — warm is fine, hot is fail.
CO alarm chirping low-battery vs alarming continuously
Continuous alarm means CO present; chirp every 30 to 60 seconds means dead battery. Do not silence a continuous alarm — open the rig and leave.

1. Stop driving — pull right and clear the engine bay
If a road fire develops while moving, signal right, get fully off the asphalt onto firm shoulder so the rig is not blocking lanes, set the parking brake, and shut the engine off. Engine-bay fires often self-extinguish once airflow stops and the ignition spark is cut.

2. Get the people out — count heads outside
Children, sleeping adults, leashed dogs. Adults grab kids by the wrist (not the hand — wrist will not slip in panic). Roll out the egress window if the door is blocked. Count heads at the upwind meet-up point.

3. Shut off LP at the tank
If you can safely reach the propane tank valve without crossing flame, close it clockwise. Removing the fuel supply slows kitchen and furnace fires. Never delay evacuation to do this — life always over property.

4. Use the extinguisher only on a small contained fire with door behind you
Class K (kitchen grease) for cooktop. Class ABC dry chemical for everything else. PASS: Pull pin, Aim base of flame, Squeeze handle, Sweep side to side. If the fire is bigger than a kitchen wastebasket or the room is smoking, drop the extinguisher and get out.

5. Call 911 from outside, give address + cross-streets + LP tank size
Dispatchers route fire and EMS faster with cross-street references than site numbers. Mention propane tank size (typically 20 to 40 lb on travel trailers, 80 to 100 lb on Class A motorhomes) so crews stage at safe distance.

6. Stay out — wait for fire department all-clear
Re-entry kills more people than the initial fire. Even after visible flame is out, structural collapse, lithium battery re-ignition, and LP tank vapor pockets can flash. Wait for the incident commander to clear the rig.

Working alarms, tested monthly, replaced every 5 years
NFPA 1192 §5.6 requires both a smoke alarm and a CO alarm inside every RV sold for habitation. Press the test button on the first of every month. Replace the entire unit (not just the battery) every 5 years — sensor chemistry degrades over time. Missing or dead alarms are a recurring finding in USFA recreational-vehicle fire investigations.
Two-out family drill, rehearsed twice per trip
On arrival at every new site, walk every adult and child through the door route AND the egress-window route. Open the egress window. Have kids climb out. Time it. Sub-30 seconds from sleeping bag to ground is the target. Re-rehearse if you re-park or change campsites.
Class K + Class ABC extinguishers within arm's reach
USFA guidance recommends one Class K (or BC) extinguisher mounted within reach of the cooktop and a second Class ABC dry-chemical extinguisher at the main exit door. Inspect the gauge monthly — needle in the green band. Have a qualified shop service or replace the unit per the inspection tag.
Inspect wheel-well bearings and brakes before every long tow
Wheel-bearing seizure throws heat into the tire and into the cargo bay above. Hand-feel each hub after a long drive — uniformly warm is normal, one hub painfully hot is a bearing failing. Pack bearings annually on travel trailers per Dexter and Lippert axle service intervals.
Norcold / Dometic absorption-fridge recall check
Enter your fridge serial number into the NHTSA recall database (nhtsa.gov/recalls) before every season. Norcold and Dometic have issued multi-year recalls for cooling-unit boil-overs and burner-tube cracks that ignited adjacent insulation. Free upgrade kits are typically still available years after the recall date.
Lithium battery thermal-runaway containment
If you upgraded house batteries to LFP / lithium-iron-phosphate, mount them in a vented compartment with the BMS monitored. Avoid drop-in lead-acid replacements not specifically rated for marine / RV vibration. Lithium fires cannot be extinguished by water or dry chemical — only smothered and isolated.
Real case studies
U.S. Fire Administration · NFIRS recreational vehicle fire dataset
USFA's analysis of National Fire Incident Reporting System data reports an annual average of 4,200 RV fires in the United States from 2018 to 2020. By area of origin, RV fires most often started in engine, running gear and wheel areas (26%), followed by other miscellaneous vehicle areas (16%) and operator/passenger areas (9%); cooking areas accounted for 8%. By cause, unintentional actions accounted for 36% and failure of equipment or a heat source for 15%. The galley is not where most RV fires begin — watch the engine bay and wheels as closely as the stove.
Lesson: Treat any interior smoke alarm as a one-minute evacuation event. Preparation prevents most cases; the cases that escape preparation are unsurvivable without a rehearsed drill.

Norcold / Dometic absorption-refrigerator recalls · NHTSA file history
Norcold's absorption-refrigerator cooling units were recalled by NHTSA under campaigns 02E-045 (8,419 units), 08E-030 (264,999 units), 09E-026 (5,900 units), 09E-027 (22,350 units) and 10E-049 (151,795 units); campaign 10E-049 supersedes the four earlier ones. NHTSA describes the defect as a fatigue failure in the section of the cooling unit that contains the refrigerant, which allows the liquid solution to slowly leak. If refrigerant gas is still in place when the rupture occurs, hydrogen gas may be expelled and can be ignited by the high temperature, possibly causing a fire and serious injury or death. Check your refrigerator's serial number against those campaign numbers in NHTSA's recall database.
Lesson: Cross-reference your refrigerator serial number against the active NHTSA recall database before every season. Recall remedies are free and the brackets / upgrade kits are still available many years after issue.

Smoke + CO alarm requirement · NFPA 1192 Standard on Recreational Vehicles
NFPA 1192 §6.1.1 requires at least one integral battery-operated smoke alarm in each recreation vehicle, listed to UL 217 under §6.1.1.3. Under §6.1.1.4 that alarm is installed in accordance with its listing but NOT within the separate sleeping areas. A separate CO alarm is required under §6.1.2. Both requirements apply to every recreational vehicle — there is no exemption for a rig that was not sold for sleeping occupancy. Manufacturers certify compliance to RVIA, whose seal is visible at the entry door.
Lesson: Verify both alarms exist, both are within their 5-year replacement cycle, and both pass the test-button audible response before every trip.
What authorities don't always tell you
1The door is not always the right exit
Fire travels along the ceiling, so kitchen fires block the main door before they block the rear bedroom. Every passenger needs to know the egress-window location AND have opened it at least once. Children especially need the muscle memory — they cannot puzzle out a single-action latch in smoke and darkness.
2Lithium house batteries do not respond to dry-chemical extinguishers
An LFP / Li-ion thermal-runaway event self-sustains because the cathode releases its own oxygen. Class ABC dry-chem will not stop it. The only field tactic is isolation — get the rig away from people and let it burn under fire-department supervision. Mount lithium banks in a vented exterior bay, not in a sleeping area.
3Reverse-polarity pedestals start invisible fires inside the rig
A miswired pedestal (hot conductor swapped onto the neutral pin) puts continuous voltage on chassis ground. A line-voltage surge protector with miswire detection (the type that displays L1 / L2 / N / G fault codes) catches this in two seconds. A protector without polarity detection does not. Spend the extra $100 on a Progressive Industries EMS or Hughes Watchdog-class unit with display.
4Engine-bay extinguishers should be clean-agent or ABC, not Halon, in current rigs
Halon 1211 systems are still found on older Class A motorhome chassis. Halon 1211 production was phased out under the Montreal Protocol; refills are expensive and increasingly unavailable. ABC dry chemical or a clean-agent (FM-200, Novec 1230) replacement is what current installers fit. Halon 1301 fixed systems remain legal in specific applications under EPA SNAP — confirm with installer before refilling.
5Most fatal RV fires happen overnight in a stationary rig, not in a road incident
USFA data is consistent year over year — sleeping occupants and slow detection drive the fatality rate, not high-speed crashes. The countermeasure is the alarm test + the rehearsed drill, not better road skills. If your rig is parked and you are sleeping, the alarm is your only warning.
Equipment recommendations

Class ABC dry-chemical extinguisher
Spec: Minimum 2A:10B:C rating, gauge visible, hose-equipped models preferred for cabin use. NFPA 1192 §5.7 minimum is 5-B:C.
Storage: Wall-mounted bracket within reach of the exit door.
Class K kitchen extinguisher
Spec: Wet potassium-acetate agent rated for cooking oil / grease fires. Stovetop suppression canisters (StoveTop FireStop type) also available.
Storage: Within arm's reach of the cooktop, mounted on the bulkhead opposite the stove.
Smoke + CO combo alarm
Spec: 10-year sealed-battery lithium alarm with combined CO sensor. UL 217 (smoke) + UL 2034 (CO) listed. Replace whole unit at the 10-year date stamp.
Storage: Ceiling mounted in living area per manufacturer instructions; second unit near the bedroom.
Emergency egress-window familiarity
Spec: Not a purchase — a procedure. NFPA 1192 §5.5 requires the release to be single-action and operable from inside. Open it at every new campsite to verify operation.
Storage: Mark the latch with reflective tape so it is visible by flashlight.
Line-voltage EMS surge protector with display
Spec: Hard-wired or pedestal-plug type with L-N-G fault detection, polarity reversal cutoff, high / low voltage cutoff, and surge joules rating ≥4,800 J.
Storage: Installed permanently at the shore-power inlet (hard-wired) or carried as portable unit plugged into pedestal first.

Frequently asked questions
How fast does an RV fire actually spread?
USFA reporting and NIST research on compartment fires indicate flashover (full-room ignition) occurs in roughly 60 to 90 seconds inside an RV, versus 3 to 5 minutes in a typical residential bedroom. The compressed timeline is driven by small interior volume, lightweight luan / foam-core wall construction, and concentrated polyurethane mattress and cushion fuel load.
Should I try to fight the fire before evacuating?
Only if all three are true: (1) you have a clear exit behind you, (2) the fire is smaller than a kitchen wastebasket and contained to one object, (3) you have a working rated extinguisher in hand. Otherwise drop everything and execute the drill — USFA reviews repeatedly find that civilians who delayed evacuation to fight fires sustained more injuries than those who left immediately.
How do I know my emergency egress window actually works?
Open it every time you change campsites. Per NFPA 1192 §5.5 the release must be operable from inside with a single action. If it has been painted shut, the bug screen is fastened over it, or the latch is corroded — fix it before you sleep in the rig again. RVIA's pre-trip checklist includes a window-operation check.
Are RV fire extinguishers actually required, or are they a recommendation?
NFPA 1192 §5.7 requires every RV sold for habitation to be equipped with a portable fire extinguisher of minimum 5-B:C rating accessible near the main entrance. Many manufacturers exceed the minimum with a 2A:10B:C unit. Check the gauge monthly and replace per the inspection tag on the bracket.
What about lithium house battery fires — can I extinguish those?
Lithium thermal-runaway events are not extinguishable with standard ABC dry chemical or water. The cell releases its own oxygen as it decomposes. The field protocol is to remove people, separate the battery bay if possible, and let the fire burn under fire-department supervision. Mount lithium banks in a vented exterior compartment, not under a bed.
