Hot smell at brake-temp checkpoint
On long descents like Colorado's Eisenhower west approach or Donner Summit, CalTrans and CDOT have brake-check pullouts. Stop. Hand-test wheel hubs (back of hand near, not on, the rotor). Painful heat on one corner is a stuck caliper; equal heat across all corners is fade in progress.
Pedal that goes deeper each application
Brake-fluid boil produces compressible vapor in the lines. Each press goes deeper because each press compresses more vapor before it moves the calipers. Pedal travel deepening across three or four applications is the warning that fade is starting.
Smoke from the wheel wells
Visible white smoke is friction-material outgassing at roughly 600 degrees F and above. The next stage is friction-material delamination and complete loss of braking.
Pulsation that was not there at the top of the pass
Heat warps rotors. A rotor that ran true at the summit pulses at the bottom because thermal distortion has set in. The pulsation itself is harmless; the underlying heat is the problem.
Engine RPM higher than fuel consumption suggests
If you are letting the engine spin freely in a high gear instead of holding it in a low gear and using the engine brake, you have already lost the descent. The tachometer should be near the engine's torque peak on a steep grade, not at idle.
ABS or stability-control lights on the dash
Late-model Class C and Super C systems disable ABS above certain temperatures to protect the modulator. The warning light means the computer has stopped helping; the brakes are now whatever the pedal alone produces.

1. Downshift to the gear you should have started in
Pull the selector into a numbered gear that holds the engine in the upper third of its RPM band at descent speed. On an Allison-equipped diesel, that often means range 3 or even 2 on a 6-percent grade. On a gasser, drive becomes 3 becomes 2 as steepness increases.

2. Activate the engine brake or exhaust brake
Diesel pushers have a Jacobs (Jake) brake; cab-overs have an exhaust brake. Toggle to the highest setting. The engine becomes a compressor and absorbs torque downhill, which is exactly the energy you would otherwise dump into friction brakes.

3. Use a snub-braking pattern on gassers
On gas-engine motorhomes without an engine brake, FMCSA's snub-braking method works: brake firmly for 3 seconds to drop 5 mph below safe speed, then release for 30 seconds to cool, repeat. Avoid feathering — sustained light pressure builds heat fastest.

4. Watch the descent grade sign and your speedometer together
FHWA standardizes mountain-descent signage with percent grade and length (for example: 7% grade next 9 miles). Compute the safe descent speed in your head: a heavy RV should descend a 7-percent grade at no more than 30 mph in a low gear.

5. Take the runaway ramp if pedal travel is increasing
Do not bargain with the next switchback. The first ramp you pass after pedal degradation is the ramp you take. Hold the wheel straight. Let the gravel pull you to a stop.

6. After a stop, do not touch the wheel hubs
Cooked brake hardware sits at 400 to 800 degrees F. Touch is a third-degree burn. Wait at least 30 minutes before any inspection. Call for a mobile RV mechanic; do not attempt to descend further on the same hardware.
Prevention
Pre-descent prep at the summit pullout
Every major Western pass (Eisenhower, Vail, Donner, Snoqualmie, Cabbage Hill) has a summit pullout. Stop. Read the descent sign aloud. Select your gear. Engage your engine brake. Do this before the steep section, not during it.
Annual brake-system service
DOT 4 brake fluid absorbs water and boils at a lower temperature each year. Flush every two years per most chassis-maker schedules — Ford F-53 motorhome chassis, Freightliner XCS, and Spartan all publish two-year intervals. Test with a moisture refractometer or replace on schedule.
Train on a known pass before the trip you actually care about
Drive a moderate pass (US 50 Monarch, ID 21 Galena, or AZ 87 Mogollon Rim) before tackling the Eisenhower or Tioga Pass. Practice gear selection at low stakes. The first time you engage a Jake brake under load should not be on Loveland.
Carry the FMCSA Commercial Driver's License Manual mountain chapter
Section 2.18 of the CDL Manual covers downhill speed, engine braking, escape ramps, and runaway prevention. The chapter is free, public domain, and the most authoritative single document on the topic. Read it before any pass over 5,000 feet of descent.
Avoid certain passes in certain seasons
RV-prohibited segments exist on some passes — California's Tioga Road has length limits, and several Colorado passes restrict trailers above certain lengths in winter. Check Colorado 511, Cal-Trans QuickMap, or the state DOT app before departure.
Pre-charge house batteries to reduce parasitic draw on the chassis
Diesel pushers run the chassis alternator at low output during long descents (low RPM despite the high-gear-equivalent retarder mode). Keep house batteries charged separately so the chassis system is not asked to make up the deficit while you need every electrical reserve for brake-light and ABS draw.

Diesel pushers brake on the exhaust, not the engine
What most owners call a Jake brake on a Cummins ISL or ISX is technically a compression-release retarder; on an ISB it is usually an exhaust brake. The two work differently. Compression releases dump cylinder pressure at top dead center; exhaust brakes restrict the exhaust to create back-pressure. Both absorb energy, but exhaust brakes lose effectiveness fast at low RPM. Keep the engine spinning.
Gas motorhomes with tow/haul are still under-braked at high GVWR
Ford F-53 chassis tow/haul mode delays upshifts and increases downshift aggressiveness but does not add a retarder. A 22,000-lb gas Class A on a 7-percent grade exceeds the F-53 brake-cooling budget if descended in drive. Manually select 2 (low gear) and accept the loud engine.
DOT 4 brake fluid is hygroscopic and boils sooner each year
DOT 4 absorbs roughly 2 to 3 percent water by volume per year of service. Each percent drops the wet boiling point by approximately 25 degrees F. After two years a system that left the factory boiling at 446 degrees F is boiling at 320 degrees F — within easy reach of a sustained descent.
The painted speed limit on a descent sign assumes a stock passenger car
California's 'TRUCKS 35' signs and Colorado's recommended descent speeds on Loveland assume tractor-trailer braking budgets. A 32-foot Class A with a tow vehicle weighs less than the truck the sign anticipates but has worse brake-cooling — descend at the truck-recommended speed or slower.
Runaway ramps appear on FHWA maps even when not marked at exit
FHWA Highway Functional Classification maps annotate every escape ramp on a federal-aid highway. A trip-planning pre-read using the FHWA viewer prints them on the route in advance. Knowing where the ramps are before the descent is half the survival probability.

Why do RV instructors say to downshift instead of brake on long descents?
Friction brakes dissipate kinetic energy as heat. Heat is the limiting factor; once friction material overheats, it stops working. Engine braking and exhaust braking dissipate energy through the engine's air-pumping cycle without generating brake-rotor heat, so the friction system stays in reserve.
Are runaway-truck ramps actually open to RVs?
Yes. Runaway ramps are public highway features designed for any over-mass vehicle losing brakes. There is no charge or citation for using one in an emergency. The recovery tow is the only out-of-pocket cost, and most RV insurance policies cover it.
How do I know if my motorhome has an engine brake or exhaust brake?
Diesel pushers (Cummins ISC, ISL, ISX) typically have a Jacobs-style compression-release brake. Gas chassis (Ford F-53, Workhorse W-series) typically have no factory engine brake but accept Banks or Pacbrake aftermarket exhaust brakes. Check the dash for an ENG-BRAKE or EXH-BRAKE toggle.

Does the engine brake hurt the engine if used for long descents?
No. Engine brakes are designed for sustained downhill use; the duty cycle is exactly what they were engineered for. The wear concern is on the exhaust valve seats on compression-release brakes after many years of continuous use, but typical recreational duty does not reach that threshold.
