The initial report is the rupture; the cadence is the deflated carcass slapping the wheel well at the rotational frequency of the wheel. Cadence speeds with vehicle speed.
Rapid TPMS drop on one corner
A TIA-spec direct TPMS reads to 1-PSI resolution and triggers a warning at roughly 25 percent below cold setpoint. The corner that drops to single digits in under five seconds is the failure.
Smoke or rubber smell from a rear wheel well

1. Anchor your grip and add throttle
Lock both hands at nine and three. Add a deliberate half-second of throttle to pull the rig straight. This is the move every reflex argues against and every NHTSA-funded RV-driving curriculum trains you to make.

2. Keep eyes high and ahead
Target-fixation puts you where you are looking. Look down the lane, not at the failed tire and not at the shoulder. Your hands will track your eyes.

3. Bleed speed by coasting
Lift off the throttle smoothly. Do not downshift a tow vehicle aggressively (driveline shock can break the pull). Coast through 50, 40, 30 mph before the brake comes in.

Below roughly 30 mph the dynamic forces have collapsed enough that braking no longer pivots the rig. Apply firmly, evenly, both feet flat — never stab.

Right turn signal a hundred feet before the shoulder. Aim for firm gravel or paved shoulder. Soft sand grabs the rim flange and can roll the rig as it stops.

Parking brake firm. Four-way flashers on. Wheel chocks on the side away from traffic. Then walk OUT of the traffic-side door, never the driver door if you are on a left shoulder.
Prevention
Date-code every tire on every long-tow prep
Read the four-digit DOT week-year code on the sidewall (WWYY). The Rubber Manufacturers Association and Goodyear RV tire bulletins both recommend replacement at 5 to 7 years from build date regardless of tread depth. Trailer tires especially fail by UV and ozone aging, not by mileage.
Run an upgraded direct-TPMS, not just OEM
A 6-sensor or 10-sensor aftermarket TPMS with 1-PSI resolution and individual alerts costs $200 to $400 and alerts in the rapid-loss window. The OEM truck system on most tow vehicles only watches the four powered tires.
Set cold pressure to the tire-and-loading-information placard
The placard inside the driver door (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110) lists the cold pressure for the as-built load. Re-set after every payload change. Under-inflation generates heat; heat is what kills RV tires.
Weigh corner-by-corner once a year

Rotate trailer tires by axle pattern, not by storage rotation

Replace the valve stem and core with every new tire

The throttle-up move feels suicidal because it is suicidal in a car
Passenger-car blowout protocol is gentle braking. RV protocol is the opposite. The reason: passenger-car weight distribution is roughly 60-front 40-rear with a short wheelbase. A Class A motorhome rides on a longer wheelbase and carries enormous mass behind the rear axle (the bedroom and bathroom). Drag at one corner pivots that mass. Adding tractive force at the powered axle is the only way to balance it.
Inner-dual blowouts get missed for hundreds of miles
Dual rear wheels share the load. When the inner one fails, the outer carries the full corner — and continues rolling. You only notice when the outer fails too, by which point the rig is on three tires at speed. Walk every dual at every fuel stop. Hand-test the sidewall temperature; a hot outer next to a cool inner is the inner letting go.
Spare tires on RVs are decorative more often than not
Many Class A and travel-trailer spares are decade-old originals that have never been pressurized since the factory. Pull the spare every spring. Inflate to placard. Date-check it. If it fails the test, replace it — you cannot change a 19.5-inch wheel on the shoulder of I-15 with a bottle jack.

Why am I told to throttle up when every other safety class teaches to brake?
Passenger-car blowout protocol assumes a short wheelbase and balanced weight. An RV has a long wheelbase with mass behind the rear axle, so the deflated corner becomes a pivot. Brief throttle input pulls the rig straight against the drag; braking pivots it.
How old is too old for an RV tire even if it still has tread?
Industry guidance (NHTSA-cited Rubber Manufacturers Association and major brand bulletins from Goodyear, Michelin, and Bridgestone) is five to seven years from the DOT date code on the sidewall, regardless of remaining tread. Trailer tires are particularly age-driven.
Does a TPMS actually prevent blowouts or just warn after one?

What pressure should I run if the placard says one thing and the tire sidewall says another?
The placard inside the driver door is the cold pressure for the vehicle as built. The sidewall is the maximum pressure for the tire at full rated load. Run the placard pressure, then adjust upward to the sidewall ceiling if you are loaded to the corner-weight maximum.
