Trailer rocks side-to-side after a passing semi or wind gust
A correctly loaded and hitched rig damps the disturbance in one or two cycles. A rig that oscillates 3+ cycles is the precursor to runaway sway — investigate before the next trip.
Brake-controller display showing intermittent gain or no response
If the trailer brakes are not engaging, manual sway recovery cannot be executed. Test the brake controller monthly with the manual slider — trailer should brake firmly without the tow vehicle's brake pedal.
Uneven tire wear front vs rear of trailer
Indicates incorrect ride height (weight-distribution hitch not adjusted correctly), axle out of alignment, or chronic mis-loading. Cup wear or sawtoothing on one side suggests a bent axle or worn bearings.
Tow vehicle rear squat with trailer connected
Visible squat (more than 1-1.5 inches at the rear) means the WD hitch is under-tensioned or absent. The tow vehicle headlights point up, steering goes light, and the entire combination is in the configuration that produces sway.
Cargo loaded heavy at the rear of the trailer
Bikes on the rear bumper, generator on the back rack, or a heavy tongue-mounted spare wheel on a forward bumper that is later moved aft — all shift center of mass rearward and reduce tongue weight.

1. Recognize the oscillation early
First side-to-side movement is the moment to act. Most drivers wait until the second or third cycle, when the swing is already feet wide. Light pressure on the trailer-brake slider in the first half-cycle stops the event immediately.

2. Trailer brakes only — finger on the slider
Brake controller manual slider applies the trailer's electric brakes without engaging the tow vehicle's. This pulls the trailer straight back into line with the tow vehicle. Hold gently until the oscillation damps, then release.

3. Off-throttle, hands at 9 and 3, no counter-steering
The pendulum has a natural frequency; counter-steering at the wheel feeds energy into the pendulum at the wrong phase. Steering straight ahead is the right input. Off-throttle removes the energy supply.

4. Slow gradually to the next exit, ramp, or wide shoulder
Do not stop in the lane unless control is lost. Get to the next exit or wide shoulder at reduced speed. Do not attempt to continue at highway speed before re-evaluating the loading.

Move heavy items forward (axle-forward). Verify tongue weight. Check WD hitch tension. If the rig swayed once, it will sway again at the same speed and load configuration unless something changes.

Even a glancing barrier contact at speed requires police report for insurance. Do not drive away from a sway-induced contact event.
Prevention
Tongue weight at 10-15% of gross trailer weight (travel trailer) or 15-25% (fifth-wheel)
NHTSA safe-towing guidance and most trailer manufacturer manuals specify this range. Sub-10% tongue weight is the dominant root cause of sway events. Measure with a tongue-weight scale (Sherline, Weigh Safe) or by weighing tow-vehicle axles loaded and unloaded at a CAT scale and subtracting.
60% of cargo forward of the trailer axle, 40% behind
Load planning matters. Heavy items (water tanks, generators, batteries, tool boxes) belong forward of the axle line, low to the floor, and as centered side-to-side as possible. Top-of-cabinet storage shifts the center of gravity up — destabilizing in crosswinds.
Weight-distribution hitch correctly tensioned for any trailer over ~3,500 lb
WD hitches (Equal-i-zer, Reese Strait-Line, B&W Continuum, Andersen, Husky Centerline) transfer tongue load forward to the tow vehicle's front axle. Correctly tensioned, the tow vehicle should sit at or very near unloaded ride height. Under-tensioned WD = rear squat = no benefit. Hitch ball type and spring-bar weight rating must match the trailer's tongue weight.
Sway control: friction bar or hitch with integrated cam action
Friction-bar sway controls (Reese, Pro-Series, Husky) provide simple damping. Cam-action systems (Reese Dual-Cam, Equal-i-zer integral, Blue Ox SwayPro, Andersen Friction-No-Sway) actively resist initial yaw before it builds. For trailers over 5,000 lb, integrated cam action is more effective than friction bars alone.
Tow vehicle within manufacturer's tow rating AND payload rating
Tow rating (max trailer weight) and payload rating (max cargo + passenger + tongue weight in the tow vehicle) are separate numbers. Most over-loaded tow combinations exceed payload before they exceed tow rating because passengers, gear, and tongue weight sum quickly. Check the tow vehicle's door-jamb sticker for actual payload remaining.
Tire pressure cold per door-jamb / trailer manufacturer spec
Under-inflated trailer tires roll over the sidewall in cornering, behaving like soft spring elements that promote sway. NHTSA recall history on RV / trailer tires repeatedly identifies under-inflation as a contributing factor to blowouts. Check pressures cold before each trip; install a TPMS monitor on every wheel.

Lesson: The recovery procedure works because of physics — applying braking force through the trailer pulls it straight back into line. Lesson: Tie down everything in the trailer interior that can shift, including the contents of cabinets. A water tank that slides aft mid-trip changes tongue weight and can initiate sway in a previously stable combination.
SAE J684 · Trailer couplings and hitches – performance requirements
SAE J684 specifies test methods and performance ratings for trailer couplings, hitch balls, ball mounts, and weight-distribution systems. The standard underlies manufacturer ratings printed on hitch balls (typically 5,000 / 7,500 / 10,000 / 12,000 lb GTW) and on WD hitch spring bars. Using under-rated components for the trailer's actual weight is the silent failure mode.
Lesson: Read the rating stamp on the hitch ball, ball mount, and WD spring bars. The lowest-rated component sets the combination's safe limit. Replace any under-rated component before towing at higher gross weight.

Brake controller manual slider is the single most-important muscle memory
Most sway events end well or badly based on whether the driver hits the manual slider in the first half-second. Find your brake controller (column-mount, dash-mount, or integrated in many newer tow vehicles), identify the slider or button by feel without looking, and practice using it at slow speed in an empty parking lot until it is automatic.
Tongue-weight measurement at home is the cheapest insurance you can buy
Sherline tongue-weight scales run roughly $150 and pay for themselves on the first trip. Alternatively, weigh the tow vehicle's rear axle at a CAT scale with and without the trailer hooked up — the difference is your tongue weight. Aim for 10-15% of measured loaded gross trailer weight.
Crosswind sensitivity is a clue your loading is marginal
A correctly loaded combination handles passing semis and crosswind gusts with a small bump and immediate recovery. A combination that 'works hard' in wind is one disturbance away from runaway sway. Take crosswind discomfort as a loading review trigger, not a driving-style adjustment.
Some pickups have Trailer Sway Control built in — know whether yours does
Many late-model Ford F-Series, GM Silverado / Sierra, Ram, and Toyota Tundra trucks include integrated Trailer Sway Control (TSC) that automatically applies asymmetric brake force to damp sway. TSC supplements correct loading and a sway-control hitch — it does not replace them. Confirm your tow vehicle includes TSC and that it is enabled.
Reduce speed before the wind, not after the sway
Sway events happen at the speed they happen at. A combination stable at 60 mph may sway at 65; one stable at 65 may go uncontrollable at 70. If the wind is gusting or you are passing a long string of semis, drop 5-10 mph proactively. Speed is the variable you control; loading and hitch are fixed once you leave the campsite.

Frequently asked questions
Why does NHTSA say to brake the trailer but NOT the tow vehicle?
Braking the tow vehicle pitches weight forward, unloads the rear axle, and reduces traction at the hitch — exactly the wrong direction for sway recovery. Braking the trailer (via the brake-controller manual slider) applies retarding force at the rear of the combination, pulling the trailer straight back into line behind the tow vehicle. NHTSA's safe-towing guidance and most professional trainers endorse this procedure.
What is the right tongue weight for my trailer?
For conventional travel trailers, NHTSA and most manufacturers specify 10-15% of gross trailer weight (loaded weight, not dry weight). For fifth-wheels, 15-25%. Measure with a tongue-weight scale or by axle-weighing the tow vehicle with and without trailer at a CAT scale. Sub-10% is the dominant sway risk factor.
Do I need a weight-distribution hitch for a small trailer?
Most manufacturers recommend WD for trailers over 3,500 lb gross weight or whenever tongue weight exceeds 350 lb. Smaller pop-ups and ultralight teardrops often do not require WD, but verify with the tow-vehicle manufacturer's manual — the tow rating itself may be conditional on WD use above a certain trailer weight.
What is the difference between sway control and weight distribution?
Weight distribution transfers tongue load forward to the tow vehicle's front axle (keeps the tow vehicle level, restores steering and braking authority). Sway control actively damps yaw oscillation between trailer and tow vehicle (friction bar, cam action, or integrated). Modern integrated WD hitches (Equal-i-zer, Reese Strait-Line, etc.) do both; older setups may pair a separate friction-bar sway control with the WD hitch.
Will Trailer Sway Control on my truck save me from bad loading?
No. Integrated TSC reduces small disturbances but cannot save a fundamentally mis-loaded combination from runaway sway. TSC supplements correct loading, correct tongue weight, and a properly tensioned WD hitch — it does not substitute for them.
