Cargo shifting sound from the bays at first hard brake
A scraping or sliding sound after the first brake application means cargo moved. Stop and re-secure before continuing. The next hard brake will move it further or break something.
Unbalanced tow on a travel trailer
If the tow vehicle pulls noticeably to one side, weight in the trailer is offset. Re-stow heavy items toward the center axle or balance left-right.
Awning rail rattling after loading the roof
Loose roof cargo transmits frequency through the roof rails into the awning hardware. A new rattle after loading the roof is a sign that something is moving up there.
Visible movement of an item under the rig's normal road oscillation
At highway speed, dash and side-mirror reflections often show the rear of the rig oscillating slightly. An item moving with that oscillation is not secured.
Strap that feels loose at the first fuel stop
Straps stretch and ratchets relax in the first hour of travel. Re-tension every strap at the first stop.
Cargo bay door that does not latch fully
An overstuffed bay door that does not latch is a door that will open at highway speed and dump contents on the road behind. Re-stow until the door closes cleanly.

1. Inventory the cargo by weight category
Light items (clothes, bedding, small electronics) go in upper cabinets with door catches. Medium items (kitchen gear, tools, generator) go in lower cabinets or bays. Heavy items (full propane, jacks, batteries) go in bays at floor level near the center axle.

2. Calculate the WLL needed per strap
FMCSA rule of thumb: strap WLL totals (per direction) at least half the cargo weight forward, one-third sideways, half rearward. A 40-lb generator needs forward straps with combined WLL of at least 20 lb. Single 1,500-lb-WLL ratchet strap is well above this; use two for redundancy.

3. Use anchor points the manufacturer installed
Underbody bays typically have D-ring anchors at the floor. Use them. Tying to a wall stud or to the underside of a cabinet is not engineered for impact loads.

4. Cross-strap for lateral restraint
Crossing the straps under or over the cargo (rather than running them parallel) catches forward, rearward, and lateral motion with the same hardware. Common in pickup-bed and motorcycle tie-down practice.

5. Use non-slip mats under heavy items
A $20 rubber mat under a generator or toolbox prevents the item from sliding even if straps stretch. Two-layer defense: friction and tension.

6. Re-tension at every fuel stop
Ratchets relax in the first hour of travel as cargo settles. A 30-second re-tension at every stop maintains the design load on the strap.
Prevention
Engineer the floor plan, not just the trip
Decide before each trip where each item lives. Tool drawer for tools; generator in the rear bay strapped to the D-rings; bikes on the bumper rack with two straps each. Repeatability eliminates ad-hoc loose-cargo events.
Use ratchet straps, not cam-buckles, for anything heavy
Cam-buckle straps (the kind you see in the kayak section of an outdoor store) work for light loads. Heavy loads need ratchets that achieve and hold true tension. WLL on ratchet straps is printed on the label; pick straps that exceed the load.
Inspect straps for UV damage and fraying
Polyester webbing weakens with UV. A strap with visible fading, fuzz, or any cut in the weave is reduced-strength and should be replaced. Annual inspection of every strap.
Install additional D-ring anchors if needed
Through-bolt D-rings are aftermarket parts that install in 15 minutes. Add them wherever the factory anchors are insufficient for typical cargo.
Carry spare straps
A strap that breaks mid-trip is replaceable only if you have spares. Carry 4 extra ratchet straps of mixed lengths.
Weigh the rig loaded once a season
RVSEF or any commercial truck-stop CAT scale provides axle-by-axle weights. Compare to GVWR and GAWR placards. Overloaded axles fail in any of several ways; cargo distribution corrects the problem cheaply.

FMCSA §393.102 cargo securement standards
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations specify minimum aggregate working-load-limit (WLL) requirements for cargo securement on commercial vehicles: at minimum, sum of WLLs at least half the cargo weight against forward force, one-third against lateral force, and one-half against rearward force, with additional requirements for certain commodity classes. The math reflects the deceleration forces of real-world braking and collisions.
Lesson: These rules apply to commercial trucks but the physics are identical for recreational vehicles. The straps you would use on a freight load are appropriate for a generator in an RV bay.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash-test cargo data
IIHS crash-test research documents the forces interior cargo exerts during collisions in passenger vehicles and pickups. Unrestrained cargo behaves as projectiles at multiples of static weight; struck occupants suffer injury patterns consistent with high-velocity impact.
Lesson: RV cabins have more loose cargo than passenger vehicles. The same physics apply with worse exposure.

The full propane tank in the front compartment is the worst projectile
A 30-lb propane cylinder full of LP, in a front compartment with a failing strap, is a 30-G impact mass with the additional risk of valve breakage. Secure with through-frame brackets, not just a strap. Inspect the bracket bolts annually.
Generator weight is a function of fuel level
Onan, Champion, and Honda generators built into RVs have 1- to 5-gallon fuel tanks. Full of gasoline they are 7 to 35 lb heavier than empty. Strap for the full-fuel weight.
Bicycle racks fail at the receiver, not the rack
Hitch-mounted bike racks (Thule, Yakima, Kuat) develop play at the receiver-to-rack interface after enough miles. Re-torque the receiver pin annually and inspect for elongation of the receiver tube.
Roof-mounted cargo affects center of gravity
A solar array, A/C, and Maxxair fan on the roof are factored into the rig's CG; an added storage box with 80 lb of gear changes the CG and affects high-wind handling. Compute the CG addition before adding heavy roof cargo.
Pet carriers are cargo
An unsecured dog crate in the back of a Class C becomes a projectile in a collision and the pet inside becomes an injury statistic. Strap the crate to a D-ring or use a crash-rated harness. CDC has noted pet-restraint as both a pet-welfare and a driver-distraction issue.

Frequently asked questions
Do FMCSA cargo securement rules apply to RV owners?
Technically, the rules apply to commercial drivers operating commercial motor vehicles. Recreational vehicle operators are not bound by the same federal regulations, but the underlying physics are identical and the rules represent the best public reference for safe practice.
How tight should I make ratchet straps?
Enough that the load does not move under hand pressure, with the cargo deflected slightly into the strap. Over-tightening can crush packages or warp cargo; under-tightening lets the load shift. The strap's printed WLL is the maximum design tension, not the target.
Can I just put heavy items on the floor of the cabin without strapping?
No. Cabin floor cargo becomes projectiles in a collision. The minimum is to wedge heavy items between fixed cabinets so they cannot move forward. The standard is to strap with proper webbing to a D-ring or anchor point.
What is a 'D-ring' and how is one installed?
A D-ring is a stainless-steel U-shaped attachment point through-bolted to the floor or wall. Aftermarket D-rings install in 15 minutes with a drill and basic tools. They are the foundation of any cargo-restraint system in a bay.
Is it dangerous to leave bicycles on a hitch rack while driving?
Bicycles on a hitch rack are safe when properly mounted, but the rack must be torqued to the receiver, the wheels must be strapped to the rack frame, and the rack must be inspected every fuel stop for loosening. Hitch-rack failures are a documented RV-roadway hazard.
