Single chirp every 30-60 seconds

Headache, dizziness, nausea in one or more occupants
Symptoms appear in the order CDC documents: headache (10-20% COHb), nausea and dizziness (20-30%), confusion and motor weakness (30-40%), unconsciousness (40-50%), death (50%+). If multiple people share symptoms simultaneously without an obvious shared cause, suspect CO before any other diagnosis.
Pets symptomatic before humans
Small mammals have higher metabolic rates and reach toxic COHb sooner. A lethargic or vomiting cat / dog in an enclosed rig with no detector alarm is itself a warning sign — the detector may be expired or sensor-blind to a slow leak below the alarm threshold.
Alarm did not sound but visible exhaust drift
Indicates a sensor in low-temperature derating (below 32°F some units lose sensitivity per the spec sheet) or end-of-life. Evacuate, ventilate, and replace the detector before re-occupying.
Soot deposits at propane appliance vents or generator exhaust
Yellow-flame or sooting combustion produces orders of magnitude more CO than properly burning blue-flame appliances. Visible soot at a furnace exterior vent or refrigerator combustion exhaust is a service item before next overnight use, regardless of detector status.

1. Evacuate before investigating
Stage-1 CO symptoms (headache, mild nausea) impair the very judgment needed to investigate safely. Get everyone outside, then think. The CDC documents multiple fatalities where the occupant re-entered to 'check the alarm' and lost consciousness inside.

2. Account for every person and pet
Headcount upwind of the rig. Pets count. Anyone with confusion, drowsiness, chest tightness, or unsteady gait goes to 911 — these symptoms are well past nuisance-alarm threshold and indicate COHb saturation that needs medical pulse-oximetry (specifically a CO-oximeter, not a pulse-ox which reads carboxyhemoglobin as oxygenated).

3. Shut off the suspect source from outside
Propane tank valve at the cylinder, generator stop button at the exterior compartment, engine kill if onboard genset. Do not re-enter the cabin. If the source is unclear, leave everything off until the responding fire crew measures with a calibrated meter.

4. Wait for a portable CO meter reading before re-entry
Most fire departments arrive with a calibrated electrochemical meter (Dräger, MSA, BW). They will sweep the cabin and report PPM at multiple heights. Re-entry is safe only when readings are below 9 PPM (the ASHRAE 62.2 indoor-air-quality threshold for residential occupancy).

5. Open windows and roof vents only after the source is off
Ventilating while the source still produces CO can re-energize the leak and disperse it more widely. Source off first, then ventilation. Once readings are clear, leave windows open for 30-60 minutes before re-occupying.

6. Replace the detector if it sounded but you cannot identify a source
A false-alarm is rare in UL 2034 units; what is common is a sensor near end-of-life producing spurious alarms. Note the date-of-manufacture and replace the unit before next trip if it is within 12 months of the listed lifespan.

7. Seek medical evaluation for anyone symptomatic
COHb has a half-life of 4-5 hours on room air, 60-90 minutes on 100% oxygen, and 20-30 minutes in a hyperbaric chamber. ER pulse-ox is misleading (reads CO-bound hemoglobin as saturated O₂). Request CO-oximetry or arterial blood gas. The CDC's MMWR series documents delayed neurologic sequelae weeks after exposure in patients who received only room-air recovery.
Prevention
Detector vs. alarm — know which you have
A CO detector is a sensor element with no built-in alarm — typically panel-integrated with a remote sounder. A CO alarm is a self-contained unit that detects AND sounds — the residential / RV norm. NFPA 1192 §6.3 requires a UL 2034-listed CO alarm (not a detector) in every recreational vehicle with a fuel-fired appliance or generator. Bare CO detectors without an integrated alarm meet a different industrial standard (UL 2075) and are not compliant for an RV unless wired into a listed control panel.
Placement per NFPA 720 + manufacturer instructions
CO is roughly the same density as air (28.0 g/mol versus 29.0 g/mol for air) and mixes thoroughly with cabin air — placement height is less critical than for propane (which sinks) or smoke (which rises). NFPA 720 specifies installation in or near the sleeping area, at the manufacturer's recommended height (typically 5 feet above the floor on a wall, or on the ceiling at least 4 inches from the wall). Mount it in the bedroom or in the hallway directly outside the sleeping compartment, not next to the propane appliance (false-alarm during normal startup).
Test monthly — and know what the test button actually tests
The TEST button verifies electronic continuity, battery voltage, and the audible sounder. It does NOT test the electrochemical sensor's actual gas-detection capacity. To verify sensor response, use a calibrated CO test gas (typically sold as a 50 PPM aerosol can for fire departments) once per year, or rely on the manufacturer's date-of-manufacture replacement schedule. The CPSC's 'check on the first of every month' guidance verifies the alarm wakes you; it does not verify the sensor still works.
Replace on date code, not on intuition
Look at the date-of-manufacture sticker on the back of the unit. The listed sensor life is 5-7 years for older electrochemical cells and up to 10 years for newer ones — but it counts from manufacture, NOT from installation. A unit that sat on a warehouse shelf for 2 years has 3-8 years of useful life from purchase, not 5-10. Write the replace-by date on the front of the unit with a sharpie at install. Replace before that date, not after.
Combination smoke-and-CO units have a shorter listed life
Dual-sensor units are convenient but their CO sensor typically carries the same 5-10 year life as a dedicated CO alarm. Replacing the whole unit when the CO sensor expires also retires a still-functional smoke sensor early. Many full-time RVers prefer dedicated single-purpose units for this reason.
Verify the low-temperature derating window for your unit
UL 2034 requires alarms to function within 40°F to 100°F (4°C to 38°C). Below 32°F many electrochemical cells lose sensitivity — the sensor still reads, but slower, with delayed alarm time. RVers in winter conditions with overnight cabin temps below freezing should run the furnace or a 12V heater to keep the detector in its listed temperature range. Some premium units extend the range to -40°F; check the spec sheet on your specific model.

CDC MMWR Series · Carbon Monoxide-Related Deaths · United States
The CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report has tracked unintentional non-fire CO poisoning fatalities since the early 1990s. The recurring pattern in mobile-residence and recreational-vehicle deaths: a CO alarm was present but expired beyond its listed sensor life, or a unit had been removed because of prior nuisance alarms during cooking. The CDC's recommendation since 2008 has been universal residential CO alarm installation with replacement on the manufacturer's date-of-manufacture schedule, not visual inspection.
Lesson: An expired alarm is a worse hazard than no alarm — its presence creates a false sense of protection while providing none.

CPSC, in coordination with Underwriters Laboratories, finalized UL 2034 in 1992 and updated it through multiple revisions. The current standard prescribes the time-to-alarm thresholds (70 PPM / 60-240 min, 150 PPM / 10-50 min, 400 PPM / 4-15 min), the T3 alarm pattern, the low-temperature operating range, and the end-of-life chirp behavior. UL 2034 alarms are required by NFPA 1192 §6.3 in every RV with a fuel-burning appliance or onboard generator.
Lesson: Buy the UL 2034 sticker on the back of the unit. Anything without that sticker is not a compliant RV CO alarm — even if it looks identical on the shelf.
NFPA 1192 · Standard on Recreational Vehicles · §6.3 CO Alarm
NFPA 1192 §6.3 requires every RV with a fuel-burning appliance, an internal combustion engine, or an onboard generator to have a listed CO alarm installed per the manufacturer's instructions. The alarm must be a UL 2034-listed unit (not a UL 2075 detector). The standard also requires the alarm to be located so the alarm signal is audible from each sleeping area. RVIA certification (the oval sticker at the entry door) signals manufacturer self-certified compliance to NFPA 1192 at build time, but post-purchase replacement and testing are the owner's responsibility.
Lesson: RVIA certification does not survive sensor expiration. The factory-installed alarm needs its first replacement at the 5-10 year mark from its date-of-manufacture sticker.

The test button does not test the sensor
It tests the battery, the speaker, and the alarm circuitry. The electrochemical CO sensor is a wet-cell device with a fixed shelf life that degrades whether powered or not — the test button cannot interrogate sensor sensitivity. Fire-department CO meters use a calibrated 50 PPM test gas; some hardware stores sell smaller aerosol cans of the same gas for periodic owner verification.
Refrigerator absorption units in 12V/LP mode produce trace CO during startup
An absorption-cycle refrigerator on propane runs a small flame. During startup or after a power-mode switch, the flame burns slightly less completely until equilibrium. A CO alarm installed adjacent to the fridge can chirp once during normal operation. The fix is placement compliance with NFPA 720 — not muting or relocating the alarm to a less effective position.
Hyperbaric oxygen reverses neurologic sequelae if administered within 24 hours
The CDC and the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society document significantly reduced delayed neurologic sequelae (memory loss, executive-function deficits) when patients with moderate-to-severe CO poisoning receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy within 24 hours of exposure. The U.S. operates roughly 1,500 hyperbaric chambers — locate the nearest before any trip to a region where you'll be running propane or generator overnight.
A low-battery chirp at 3 AM is not necessarily a low battery
The end-of-life chirp pattern in UL 2034 alarms is similar to a low-battery chirp (single chirp every 30-60 seconds). Many owners replace the battery, hear it stop for a few hours, and then it resumes — that is the sensor announcing end-of-life, not the new battery failing. Check the date-of-manufacture sticker; if the unit is within 12 months of its listed lifespan, replace it whole.
Plug-in 120V units lose protection when shore power drops
Some RVers use household-style 120V plug-in CO alarms as a backup. Those units have a battery backup of a few hours to a few days, but extended shore-power outages will silence them while the rig's primary 12V house-battery system continues to power propane appliances. The primary RV CO alarm should be 12V-wired into the house battery bank, not plugged into a shore-power outlet.

How do I know my CO alarm is still working — the test button beeps?

Note that the CO sensor in a combination unit typically expires at the same 5-10 years as a dedicated CO alarm, which means replacing the whole unit retires the still-good smoke sensor early. If everyone feels fine, can I just open windows and silence the alarm?
No. CO can produce significant carboxyhemoglobin saturation before subjective symptoms appear, especially in healthy adults. The alarm is designed to trigger at concentrations below symptomatic exposure for most healthy people. Treat any active alarm as evacuation-trigger, and request a fire-department portable meter reading before re-entry. If the meter reads below 9 PPM, re-entry is safe; if the alarm sounded but the meter is clear, the sensor may be at end-of-life and the unit needs replacement.
