Generator exhaust drift into the rig (wind shift)
Onboard generators exhaust at floor level, typically out the curb side. A 5-10 mph wind change can redirect exhaust UNDER and into the rig through the wheel wells, the slide-out floor gap, or open windows on that side. The NPS / CDC document this as the single most common scenario in RV CO fatalities — generator running overnight, wind shift between 2-4 AM, occupants asleep, alarm absent or expired.
Yellow flame at a propane appliance burner
Properly burning propane shows a sharp blue cone with a small yellow tip. A predominantly yellow flame indicates incomplete combustion (insufficient air mix, dirty burner orifice, partial flue blockage, restricted intake). Yellow-flame appliances produce orders of magnitude more CO than blue-flame appliances.
Soot deposits at appliance exterior vents
Black or brown soot on the exterior vent grille of a furnace, water heater, or refrigerator combustion vent indicates incomplete combustion AND degraded flue draft. Service the appliance before next overnight use; flue inspection by a qualified RV tech.
Mud-dauber or wasp nests in appliance combustion intakes
Mud daubers seek small dark cavities — the propane water heater's combustion air intake is ideal. A blocked intake produces fuel-rich combustion, yellow flame, and elevated CO. Annual visual inspection of every exterior appliance vent, especially after winter storage.
Neighbor's generator running uphill / upwind of your rig
A generator 20-30 feet upwind can put CO into your cabin air at concentrations the alarm will eventually detect. NPS campgrounds and many private parks have generator quiet hours specifically to reduce overnight neighbor-source CO. If a neighbor runs a generator overnight upwind of you, the safe response is to close your windows on that side and re-orient ventilation away from the source.
Chassis engine running while occupants are inside
Motorhome chassis engine exhaust at the tailpipe can drift forward under the rig and enter through wheel-well and undercarriage gaps. Running the engine in a closed garage, under a low overhang, or with rear vents downwind in any enclosed environment puts CO into the cabin.

1. Evacuate before troubleshooting
Stage-1 CO symptoms impair judgment. Get everyone out first, think second. Multiple documented fatalities involve occupants re-entering 'just to check' and losing consciousness inside.

2. Identify and stop the source from outside
Generator stop button at the exterior compartment. Propane cylinder valves at the cylinder. Chassis engine kill switch. Do not enter the cabin to reach interior switches; if the panel switch is the only access, leave it and wait for the fire department.

3. Wind-direction triage
Note wind direction. If generator exhaust drift is the suspected path, move occupants perpendicular or upwind of the rig (not downwind). Reposition the rig to put the suspect exhaust outlet downwind once the source is off and the cabin is ventilated.

All windows, both entry doors, roof vents. CO has the same density as air and clears with cross-flow ventilation in 30-60 minutes.

Calibrated portable CO meter reads in PPM. Re-entry safe at <9 PPM per ASHRAE 62.2 indoor-air-quality threshold.

6. Inspect the suspected combustion source before next use
Generator: clean exhaust outlet, inspect for cracks in exhaust manifold or muffler, verify exhaust direction. Propane appliance: clean burner orifice, vacuum mud-dauber nests from intake screen, inspect flue for obstruction or rust-through. Qualified RV technician service if any uncertainty.

Pulse-ox is misleading (reads carboxyhemoglobin as saturated O₂); request CO-oximetry or arterial blood gas. CDC documents delayed neurologic sequelae weeks after moderate exposure that received only room-air recovery.

Source path 1 · Onboard generator — exhaust direction + 25-foot rule
Onboard generators exhaust through a permanent outlet (usually curb-side, floor level). Never modify the exhaust outlet to point inward. When parked, position so the exhaust outlet is downwind whenever possible. EPA + NPS guidance: no person should be within 25 feet of a running generator exhaust outlet. Onboard generators should be serviced annually — exhaust manifold gaskets and muffler integrity are the first failure points for under-rig CO.
Source path 2 · Portable generator — 20-foot minimum, exhaust away from rig
Portable inverter generators (Honda EU2200i, Champion 2000W, similar) should be placed minimum 20 feet from the rig with exhaust pointed AWAY from the rig and any neighbor's rig. The CPSC's 2018 Federal Register rulemaking proposed mandatory CO-shutoff sensors on portable generators (PGMA + Yamaha designs already include this); shutoff-equipped generators are documented to reduce fatality risk significantly. Buy generators with the CO-shutoff feature.
Source path 3 · Propane furnace — combustion-air intake clear, flue intact
RV furnaces are sealed combustion units — combustion air enters through a screened intake on the exterior, products exit through a separate flue. Both intake and flue must be unobstructed. Annual inspection: vacuum the intake screen (mud daubers, leaves, ice). Verify the exterior flue cap is intact and the flue interior is rust-free. Replace the furnace at end of service life rather than running a corroded one.

Absorption refrigerators (Dometic, Norcold; the typical RV fridge) run a small propane flame to drive the absorption cycle when on LP. Combustion air enters through the exterior side vent; products exit through a chimney to the roof exhaust. Both paths must be clear. Annual inspection: vacuum the side vent, verify the roof exhaust cap is intact. Yellow flame at the burner = service immediately.

Same architecture as the furnace: sealed combustion with exterior intake and flue. The water heater flue is shorter and more accessible than the furnace; annual visual inspection while filling the freshwater tank is the easy habit. Soot at the exterior vent is a service-now signal.

Engine exhaust at the chassis tailpipe drifts under the rig and enters through wheel-well and undercarriage gaps when wind direction is wrong or in enclosed environments (garages, low overhangs, snow-drifted parking). Never warm up a motorhome engine inside a garage. Never run engine for heat overnight without continuous fresh-air ventilation and an active CO alarm.

National Park Service · Generator Use Regulations
NPS-managed campgrounds (Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Zion, etc.) all enforce generator-quiet-hours — typically generator use prohibited from approximately 8 PM to 8 AM, with exact windows varying by park. The rule exists partly for noise, partly because overnight generator running is the single most common scenario in RV CO fatalities documented by park rangers. Snowdrift around an onboard generator exhaust outlet is documented in winter RV fatalities
An onboard generator running through a winter storm can accumulate snow around the exterior exhaust outlet. The exhaust then bubbles back into the underbelly compartment and from there into the cabin through any plumbing / wiring penetration. Sweep the exhaust outlet clear every hour during heavy snow, or shut the generator off and use shore power / battery bank for the duration.
An open slide-out can create a CO pocket on the slide-floor
When a slide-out is extended, the cabin floor area under the slide is geometrically below the main floor. CO drifting into the cabin from any source accumulates first in that pocket. A CO alarm mounted only at the main-cabin ceiling may miss a slide-pocket buildup until concentrations are high. Place the alarm at the manufacturer's recommended location AND consider a second unit if the rig has a large slide arrangement.
Inverter generators run cleaner than conventional but still produce CO
Modern inverter generators (Honda EU, Yamaha EF, Champion Inverter) burn cleaner and quieter than older conventional designs, but the CO output is still measurable and lethal in enclosed-space accumulation. 'Inverter' refers to the AC output electronics, not exhaust emissions. The 20-foot distance and downwind-direction rules apply to all portable generators regardless of inverter classification.
The propane refrigerator running on LP at altitude burns less completely
At high altitude (>6,000 ft) atmospheric oxygen partial pressure drops and propane combustion becomes less complete without burner orifice adjustment. Some absorption refrigerators have a high-altitude adjustment per the manufacturer service manual. If you camp regularly above 6,000 ft, request the altitude orifice service or switch to electric / battery operation.
Mexican-spec and Canadian-spec generators may not have ANSI/PGMA G300 CO shutoff
If buying a generator outside the U.S., or buying a used unit imported from outside the U.S., verify the CO-shutoff feature is present. The ANSI/PGMA G300 standard is a U.S. specification; international units may be electrically compatible but lack the safety feature.

How far from the rig should I put a portable generator?
