Thunder audible regardless of visible lightning
If you can hear thunder, you are within strike range of the storm. The 30/30 rule: ≤30 seconds = within 6 miles = take shelter immediately. NWS lightning safety guidance: 'When thunder roars, go indoors.'
Hair standing on end, metallic taste, audible buzzing or crackling
Indicates significant local electric field — a strike is imminent within seconds. Drop to lightning crouch IMMEDIATELY and do not stand back up until the sensation passes. This is the last warning before a direct strike.
Static electricity discharges from metal objects
Small sparks from car door, fence, or RV inlet when touched indicates elevated atmospheric charge. Move inside hard shelter.
Visible storm cells with anvil tops on the horizon
Mature thunderstorms develop the characteristic flat-topped anvil shape. Cells move 20-40 mph in many weather patterns; visible anvil on the horizon can reach you in 30-90 minutes. Begin shelter planning.
NWS Severe Thunderstorm Watch or Warning issued
Watch = conditions favorable; Warning = severe storm imminent or occurring. NWS Severe Thunderstorm Warnings include damaging wind ≥58 mph + 1-inch hail criteria. All thunderstorms produce lightning regardless of severe-criteria threshold; 'no severe warning' does NOT mean 'no lightning risk'.
Bolt-from-the-blue strikes
Lightning has been documented to strike 10-15 miles from the parent thunderstorm cell, traveling horizontally from the cloud anvil before turning downward. The strike location may be in apparently-clear sky overhead. The 30-minute rule (stay sheltered until 30 minutes after the LAST thunder) addresses this phenomenon.

1. Hard-sided shelter selection in priority order
Substantial building with plumbing and grounded electrical wiring (campground office, bathhouse, store, community center) is the gold standard. Fully enclosed metal-frame vehicle (sedan, SUV, truck, motorhome, conventional / fifth-wheel trailer) is next-best — the Faraday cage of the metal body conducts strike current around occupants. Convertibles, golf carts, ATVs, side-by-sides offer no protection.

2. RV-specific Faraday geometry — depends on construction
Modern Class A, B, C motorhomes and most aluminum / steel-framed travel trailers and fifth wheels function as Faraday cages. Fiberglass-only construction (some boats, some lightweight trailers) may NOT provide reliable shielding. Pop-up campers, fabric-roof slides, and any tent trailer offer no lightning protection. If uncertain about your rig's construction, default to seeking a substantial building during electrical storms.

3. Inside the rig — avoid contact paths
While inside the Faraday-cage rig: do not touch the chassis, electrical fixtures, plumbing fixtures, metal door / window frames, or anything wired to shore power. Disconnect shore power if practical (so a pedestal-side strike does not enter the rig through the inlet). Stay away from windows. Do not use corded electronics (use battery-powered radios, phones).

4. If no shelter is reachable — there is no safe place outdoors
NWS retired the 'lightning crouch' from its guidance in 2008: per NWS, the crouch 'simply doesn't provide a significant level of protection,' and promoting it gives a false impression of safety. The protocol is to keep moving toward the nearest hard-sided building or hard-topped vehicle without delay. Avoid open fields, ridge tops, and tall isolated trees. DO NOT lie flat — body length increases ground-current path. Stay 50+ feet from other people so a strike does not cascade through a group.

5. Avoid documented strike-attractor terrain
Isolated tall trees, ridge tops, exposed rock outcrops, open water, beach, swimming pools, soccer / baseball fields, golf courses. Strikes preferentially hit the tallest local object. Avoid being or being near the tallest object.

6. Lightning-strike victim response — CPR and 911
Strike victims are NOT electrically charged after the strike. Touch them, perform CPR if no pulse / no breathing, and call 911. The strike stops the heart and respiration in many cases; immediate CPR + AED restarts both with documented survival benefit. NLSI / NOAA data: ~10% of lightning-strike victims die; the other 90% survive with varying degrees of injury, and immediate CPR substantially reduces the fatality rate.

7. Wait 30 minutes after last thunder before resuming outdoor activity
The trailing edge of a thunderstorm continues to produce lightning for 30+ minutes after the visible heavy weather passes. NWS / NLSI: 30 minutes after the LAST thunder. Restart of outdoor activity before that window is the documented scenario for many trailing-strike fatalities at outdoor events.

Trip planning — check NWS day-of forecast and convective outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center (spc.noaa.gov) issues daily convective outlooks (1-day, 2-day, 3-day) identifying regions with elevated thunderstorm probability. Categories: Marginal / Slight / Enhanced / Moderate / High. Enhanced+ for your campground area triggers shelter-planning the morning of travel.
Campsite selection — identify hard-shelter options at check-in
When checking into any campground in thunderstorm-active regions (Florida, Gulf Coast, upper Midwest, Front Range, Southwest monsoon season July-September), identify the storm-shelter or bathhouse location and the route from your site. Sub-5-minute walk for any occupant including children. Many campgrounds publish their shelter map at check-in.
NOAA Weather Radio + smartphone app + radar app
Triple redundancy: NOAA Weather Radio with S.A.M.E. alerts at the cabin, smartphone with NWS app push alerts for the GPS location, and a real-time radar app (RadarScope, WeatherBug, MyRadar) for storm-cell tracking. Cellular alerts can be delayed during severe weather (tower congestion); NWR is the most reliable single channel.
Surge protection on shore power inlet — protects against pedestal-side strike
A line-voltage EMS (Progressive Industries EMS, Hughes Power Watchdog, Southwire Surge Guard) at the shore power inlet absorbs pedestal-side surge from a strike on the campground distribution. Without an EMS, a strike on the park transformer or distribution can destroy every electronic device in the rig. $200-400 portable, $300-500 hardwired. Disconnect shore power during electrical storms (if hardwired EMS not installed)
If your rig does not have a hardwired EMS, manually disconnect the shore cord at the pedestal at the first sign of approaching electrical storm. The cost is loss of AC for the duration; the benefit is no surge path through the inlet during strikes.
Avoid riskiest outdoor activities during convective season
Mountain hiking with afternoon thunderstorm risk: start hikes at dawn, plan to be off the summit / ridge by noon when most Rocky Mountain / Sierra / Appalachian convective cells initiate. Water activities (swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding): exit water at first thunder. Golf: leave the course (golf courses are documented strike-attractor terrain with many open metal objects).
Real case studies
NOAA · National Lightning Safety Awareness · Multi-Decade Fatality Trends
The National Weather Service reports that over the 30 years from 1989 to 2018 the U.S. averaged 43 reported lightning fatalities per year, and over the 10 years from 2009 to 2018 it averaged 27. The figure NWS publishes today is about 20 deaths each year. Reaching further back, CDC records 3,389 lightning deaths in the U.S. between 1968 and 2010 — an average of 79 per year, with the highest single-year total, 131, recorded in 1969. Deaths concentrate in outdoor leisure activities such as fishing, beach outings, soccer and golf, and in rural outdoor work. RV-occupant lightning fatalities are rare; when they happen they typically involve a pop-up or fabric-roofed unit, or occupants who were outside the rig under an awning when the strike came.
Lesson: The Faraday cage of a hard-sided rig works. The failure mode is being OUTSIDE the rig at the wrong moment — sitting at the picnic table when the storm arrives faster than expected.

National Lightning Safety Institute · Lightning Crouch Geometry
The National Weather Service stopped recommending the lightning crouch in 2008. In its own words, the crouch simply doesn't provide a significant level of protection: whether you are standing or crouching, if a lightning channel approaches from directly overhead you are very likely to be struck and either killed or injured. NWS also warns that promoting the crouch gives people the false impression that crouching will provide safety, and can lead them to become apathetic and not seek a safe shelter before the lightning threat becomes significant. The instruction that replaced it is plain: crouching doesn't make you any safer outdoors — run to a substantial building or hard topped vehicle. You are NOT safe anywhere outdoors.
Lesson: Never lie flat. Note: NWS retired the crouch from its own guidance in 2008 (it does not provide significant protection); NWS protocol is to keep moving to hard shelter — treat the crouch as a described legacy position, not a protective plan.
CDC · Lightning Injury and Hospitalization Data
The CDC documents lightning-strike injuries in WONDER and NEISS datasets. Survivors of lightning strikes (the ~90% who survive) commonly experience long-term neurologic sequelae (memory issues, sleep disturbance, chronic pain, cognitive deficits) that may not resolve fully. Acute injury includes cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, neurologic injury, blast injury from steam expansion, and contact / flash burns. Hospital evaluation is appropriate for any direct or near-strike even in apparently-asymptomatic survivors.
Lesson: Lightning-strike survivor goes to ER. Asymptomatic at the scene is not equivalent to uninjured.
What authorities don't always tell you
1The Faraday cage requires a CLOSED conductor — windows down disables it
A vehicle / rig Faraday cage works because the metal shell is a closed conductor that distributes strike current around the interior. Open windows, open doors, or extended slide-outs with fabric toppers can disrupt the geometry locally. During an active lightning storm, close all windows and doors fully. Slide-outs themselves are usually OK (the metal slide structure remains part of the cage); the fabric topper does not protect outside the rig but the cabin interior under the slide is still inside the cage.
2Ground current is the leading injury mechanism, not direct strike
Per NWS / NLSI statistics, direct strikes account for only ~5% of lightning casualties; the remaining ~95% are from ground current (current spreading through the soil from the strike point), side flash (current jumping from a struck object to a nearby person), contact (touching a struck object or wire), or upward streamer (from the person upward to meet the descending leader). Distance from the strike point, separation between people, and avoiding contact with grounded objects all matter.

4Lightning-strike victims often have cardiac arrest as the immediate cause of death
The strike depolarizes the entire cardiac muscle simultaneously. Immediate CPR + AED restarts cardiac function in many cases with full neurologic recovery. Lightning-strike resuscitation has a substantially better prognosis than most other cardiac arrest causes if rescue begins within minutes. Touch the victim — they are NOT electrically charged after the strike.
5Convex object on a flat plain attracts strikes preferentially
An RV parked alone in an open field or beach is itself the local tallest object and attracts strikes preferentially. Parking near (but not directly under) a substantial tall structure (building, mature tree, communication tower) puts the strike risk on that structure rather than the rig. 'Cone of protection' geometry suggests safe distance is roughly 1× the height of the protecting structure from its base.

Spec: iOS / Android with NWS app push alerts enabled. Lightning-tracker apps (My Lightning Tracker, RadarScope, Spark Lightning Detector) display real-time strike data from networks like Vaisala NLDN. Useful for assessing distance and trajectory of approaching cells.
Storage: On person.
Line-voltage EMS surge protector at shore inlet
Spec: Progressive Industries EMS, Hughes Power Watchdog, Southwire Surge Guard, or equivalent. Surge protection rating ≥4,800 joules. Protects rig electronics against pedestal-side surge from grid-strike events.
Storage: Hardwired at the inlet (preferred) or portable plug-in at the pedestal (cable-locked).
Hardwired AC disconnect for storm protocol

Is my RV safe in a thunderstorm?
