The lethal storm is rarely overhead. Identify your watershed: which way does water drain past your location? Storms in that upstream direction within 15-20 miles can produce a flash flood arriving at your location 20-90 minutes later, often during clear weather where you stand.

Documented signature of approaching flash flood in slot canyons. Water and debris moving through narrow rock channel produces a deep rumble audible 1-3 minutes before peak arrival. Heed this warning; do not investigate.
Water in the channel suddenly muddying or rising
Even small changes — clear stream becoming brown, water rising visibly over rocks that were dry — indicates upstream runoff has reached your location. Climb to higher ground NOW; the rise is rarely linear.
Debris in the water — twigs, leaves, foam line
A flow leading edge typically carries the lightest debris from the watershed first. A clean stream that suddenly carries surface debris is announcing an upstream event.
NWS Flash Flood Watch or Flash Flood Warning for the area
Watch = conditions favorable for the next 6-24 hours; Warning = imminent or occurring NOW. NWS warnings for slot-canyon-prone areas (Zion, Antelope Canyon area, Buckskin Gulch, Paria Canyon) trigger NPS / BLM closure of those slot canyons. Heed the warning regardless of the visible weather at your trailhead.
Upstream USGS streamgage showing rising stage / discharge
USGS operates roughly 11,000 real-time streamgages nationally (waterdata.usgs.gov, also accessible via the NWS hydrology pages). The gage upstream of your location shows current stage (water level) and discharge (flow rate) updated every 15-60 minutes. A rising trend on the upstream gage is the most quantitative early warning available short of NWS warning issuance.

1. UP, not back
Climb the canyon wall or ridge to the highest reachable point in the time available. Backtracking through the channel runs you straight into the rising water. NPS Zion / Antelope / Bryce slot-canyon rescue records consistently show survivors as those who climbed up versus victims who ran downstream.

2. Vehicle-at-crossing: Turn Around Don't Drown
If approaching a flooded road / wash / low-water crossing in any vehicle, turn around. Do not attempt to estimate depth visually — moving water hides scoured holes that swallow vehicles. The NWS TADD program has documented reduced fatality rates in jurisdictions that adopted barricaded crossings and TADD signage.

3. Vehicle floating: roof, signal, stay
If a vehicle does enter floodwater and begins to float, occupants should climb to the roof and remain there as a recognizable object for rescue. Do not enter the water — current speed and unseen debris (rocks, trees, propane tanks, livestock) make swimming flash-flood water effectively impossible to control.

4. Notify 911 and activate satellite SOS if no signal
Cellular signal is often the first casualty of a flash-flood event (lightning damage to towers, repeater outages). Satellite messengers (Garmin inReach, SPOT, ZOLEO) route to the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center, which contacts local SAR. Activate immediately if cellular fails.

5. Account for everyone in your party
Flash-flood scenes are chaotic. Group leader counts heads; missing people are reported to 911 / SAR immediately with last known location. Do not search the channel yourself — secondary surges are common in the 30-60 minutes after peak.

6. Wait for water to fully recede before any movement
Peak flow declines over 1-4 hours typically; the channel remains hazardous for several hours after visible water level returns to normal (unstable banks, hidden debris, slick rock, residual deep pools, contaminated water carrying livestock waste and chemical runoff).

7. Post-event: report new hazards to rangers + USGS
Damage to trails, washed-out roads, debris fields blocking previously open routes — report to the NPS / BLM / USFS office for the area. Other hikers and RVers will benefit from the updated information.
Prevention
Pre-trip — check the NWS Quantitative Precipitation Forecast (QPF) for your upstream watershed
NWS QPF (weather.gov/wpc/qpf) is the 6-hour and 24-hour expected rainfall map updated 4 times daily. For slot-canyon or wash exposure, identify the watershed upstream of your location and check the QPF for that drainage. Forecast >0.5 inch in 6 hours over a small upstream watershed is the rough threshold at which canyon / wash entry becomes a flash-flood gamble. NPS Zion uses approximately this standard for permit issuance / closure decisions.
Consult NPS / BLM / USFS office in person before any slot-canyon entry
NPS Zion ('The Subway', 'The Narrows'), Glen Canyon NRA, BLM Grand Staircase-Escalante, Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness all have ranger-issued permit and / or daily-condition advisory systems. Rangers integrate NWS QPF + USGS gage data + recent rainfall + soil saturation + their specific canyon hydraulics into a flash-flood probability that is more accurate than any individual data source. Carry a NOAA Weather Radio with S.A.M.E. county-coded alerts
NWS issues Flash Flood Warnings via NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) at the county or sub-county level. NWR is a dedicated broadcast network that survives cellular outages and gets warnings to the user faster than push-notification cellular alerts. Battery-backed S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding) receivers cost $30-80; programmable to the county codes for your travel area.
Set up upstream USGS streamgage as a phone bookmark
waterdata.usgs.gov serves real-time stage and discharge for ~11,000 gages. For any planned wash / canyon entry, identify the closest upstream gage and bookmark its page on your phone. A rising trend on the gage is your earliest quantitative warning of upstream rainfall reaching your location.
Never camp in a wash or dry streambed regardless of weather forecast
Multi-day RV campers in the Southwest occasionally select 'dry wash' floor sites for the flat surface and shade. NPS and BLM dispersed-camping guidance prohibits or discourages wash-floor camping for exactly the flash-flood scenario — the wash is the channel and an unforecast upstream storm can put 3-10 feet of water through the wash in minutes. Camp on higher ground above any visible channel cut.
Turn Around Don't Drown is the rule for every wet crossing
The NWS Turn Around Don't Drown program documents that more than half of U.S. flash-flood fatalities are vehicle-related. The rule is absolute: if water is flowing across a road, wash, low-water crossing, or campground access, you do not cross. Wait for water to fully recede. Identify alternate routes the day before.

NPS Zion issues permits for technical canyoneering routes (The Subway, Imlay Canyon, Pine Creek) and operates daily condition advisories for popular non-technical routes (The Narrows top-down and bottom-up). The park closes slot canyons whenever NWS issues a Flash Flood Watch or Warning for the area, and may close on lower-threshold local rainfall forecasts based on the park's canyon-specific hydrology models.
Lesson: NPS rangers integrate weather, hydrology, and canyon-specific knowledge in their closure decisions. If the park is closing a canyon, do not enter — even if your specific weather looks fine.

The 'visible storm' is the wrong indicator — the watershed map is the right indicator
Standing in a slot canyon at the Vermilion Cliffs trailhead, you may see clear blue sky directly overhead. The watershed feeding your slot extends 15-20 miles upstream, often into a different microclimate. The lethal storm is over THAT terrain, not yours. Look at the watershed map (USGS topo, also free in the Gaia GPS / CalTopo / AllTrails-Pro layers) BEFORE the trip and identify what 'upstream' means for your specific entry point.
Peak flow lag time scales with watershed size
Small steep watersheds (1-10 square miles) deliver peak flow to the outlet within 30-90 minutes of peak rainfall. Larger watersheds (50-500 square miles) lag 2-12 hours. The danger window for slot canyons in the Southwest is dominated by small steep watersheds where the time between upstream rainfall and downstream peak is minutes-to-tens-of-minutes, well inside the time required for evacuation if you started moving when you first saw rain at the trailhead.
Burn scars amplify flash-flood probability for years after the fire
Wildfire-burned watersheds have reduced soil infiltration capacity (hydrophobic soil layer, lost vegetation root systems) and elevated flash-flood risk for 3-5 years after the burn. NWS uses post-fire flood-warning thresholds substantially lower than for unburned watersheds. The 2020 wildfire season's burn scars across the West increased downstream flash-flood probability through 2025+. Check whether your destination is downstream of a recent burn area.
Atmospheric river events shift the historical baseline
California, Pacific Northwest, and the West coast generally experience increasingly common 'atmospheric river' events — narrow corridors of concentrated moisture transport that produce historically rare rainfall amounts. Flash-flood thresholds calibrated to 1970-2000 historical data underestimate atmospheric-river flooding. Dam-release floods are flash floods of a different origin
Below upstream dams (Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam, San Juan River below Navajo Dam, Truckee River below Lake Tahoe outlet), 'flash floods' originate from controlled releases rather than rainfall. The release schedule is typically published by the dam operator (Bureau of Reclamation, TVA, USACE) — check before any river-level activity downstream. A scheduled high release looks identical to a natural flash flood to anyone in the channel.

The weather at my campsite is clear. Is the slot canyon safe?
Not necessarily. The watershed feeding the canyon often extends 10-20 miles upstream into different terrain with different weather. Check NWS QPF for the upstream watershed area, the upstream USGS streamgage trend, and the NPS / BLM ranger advisory for the specific canyon. 'Clear sky overhead' is not a flash-flood safety signal.
What does 'Turn Around Don't Drown' actually mean?
The NWS public-education rule: do not drive through any water flowing over a road, wash, low-water crossing, or campground access — regardless of how shallow the water appears. 6 inches of moving water can knock down an adult; 12 inches can float a small car; 18-24 inches floats most vehicles including trucks and SUVs. Water depth at a crossing is impossible to assess visually because current scours unseen holes in the roadbed.

Can my RV survive a flash flood?
Generally no. Even modest flash floods (2-3 feet of moving water) can move a parked RV. Higher flows shred and dismember vehicles, distributing debris miles downstream. Never park overnight in a wash, dry streambed, or low-elevation drainage in a region with any flash-flood risk. Camp on higher ground above any visible channel cut.
