1. Watch the forecast not the sky
Cloud cover is a poor predictor of wind. Use a real weather app (NOAA Mobile, Windy.com, RadarScope) and watch the forecasted gust column, not the current observation.

2. Retract before leaving the site
An awning left out while you are at the trailhead or in town will fail in your absence and there is no one to react. Retract every time you leave for more than 30 minutes.

3. Retract before sleeping in forecast-uncertain weather
Sleeping awning-out depends on confidence that the wind will stay under threshold for the whole night. If the forecast is uncertain, retract; the morning re-deploy is cheaper than a 2 AM emergency retraction in a thunderstorm.

Deflappers are clamps that grip the awning to the support arms and reduce fabric oscillation. They extend the wind threshold by 5 to 10 mph but do not eliminate it.

5. Pitch one side low for rain
The Carefree and Dometic manuals show the correct rain pitch: drop the front-arm height 4 to 6 inches so water sheets off to one side rather than pooling. A 30-minute downpour can deposit hundreds of pounds in a flat-pitched awning.

6. After any wind event, inspect before re-deploying
Pull the awning out manually if possible. Look at support arm bolts. Listen for spring-tube unwind. A damaged awning that looks OK can fail at the next normal-wind event.

UV degrades the fabric and the seams. Look every spring for tear-starts at corners and seam thread damage. A small fix in spring prevents a tear-through mid-season.
Replace fabric every 8 to 10 years
RV awning fabric (acrylic or vinyl) has a usable life of 8 to 10 years in moderate climates, less in the desert Southwest. Calendar-replace before failure.
Lubricate spring tube and pivots annually

Train every adult on manual override
The manual override crank is the backup when the electric retract fails or when the awning is fighting wind. Every adult in the rig should know where the crank lives and how to use it.

Wind in canyons is not weather-station wind
Weather-station forecasts are open-terrain measurements. Canyons, mesa edges, and lake shores funnel and amplify wind to 1.5x to 2x the regional forecast. Read the wind at the actual site with a hand anemometer.
The awning is not the most expensive failure mode
When the awning peels back over the cabin roof, it takes ceiling rivets, side wall fasteners, and often a vent or A/C cover with it. A $1,500 awning replacement turns into a $6,000 roof and side-wall repair. The threshold matters.
Slide-out toppers are awnings too
Each slide-out has its own small awning over the top. These tear in wind exactly like the patio awning and they cost similar money. Inspect slide-out toppers at every season change.
Wind from the rear of the rig is worse than from the side
An awning catches wind worst when wind comes from the corner formed between the awning and the rig sidewall. Pivot the rig (if possible) so wind comes from the awning side or directly opposite, not the corner.
Manual override turns the spring tube blind
When you crank a powered awning manually, the spring tube has no electronic position feedback. Counting cranks matters; over-rotating the spring tube during manual closing unwinds the tension that supports normal operation.
