Awning automatic retract activation (sensor-equipped units)
Wind-sensor-equipped awnings (Lippert OneControl, Carefree Mirage, Dometic PowerControl) retract autonomously above their programmed threshold. The retraction itself is the warning sign that conditions have crossed the safe operating envelope; do NOT redeploy until the wind subsides for at least 30 minutes.

1. Personnel safety first — clear the awning footprint
Move everyone out from under the deployed awning before manipulating anything. Most awning-related injuries are from struck-by-fabric or struck-by-broken-hardware events with people in the footprint.

2. Power retract if motor is functional
Wall switch or remote. Many motorized awnings retract slowly but successfully against moderate wind load. If the motor stalls, do not force it manually.

3. Let the failure happen if needed
If the awning is past its design envelope and the retract motor cannot overcome wind load, get out of the way. Failure modes range from fabric tear (minor, replaceable) to arm bend / mount bracket failure (significant, often pulls a chunk of sidewall) to complete torsion-tube fracture (the awning leaves the rig as a missile). The first two are insurable; the third is dangerous to bystanders. Stay clear.

4. Photograph the scene before touching anything post-event
Multiple angles. Wide shot of the rig with awning damage. Close-ups of every torn fabric area, every bent arm, every cracked mount bracket, every gouge in the sidewall. Photograph the visible weather conditions if still ongoing (clouds, rain, debris on the ground). Include a smartphone screenshot of the NWS conditions for the location and time. Time-stamp metadata in the photos is your friend.

5. Secure the failed awning so it does not cause more damage
Tie off loose fabric with bungees or rope. Disable the retract motor at the breaker if it is cycling. Wedge a bent arm so it does not swing in the next gust. The goal is no second-event damage between now and the adjuster's inspection.

6. Notify the insurance carrier within 24 hours
Most RV comprehensive policies require notice 'as soon as practicable' — courts have generally read this as within 24-72 hours absent extraordinary circumstances. Late notice is a common claim-denial path. Call the carrier, email the photographs, get a claim number, ask for the next-step instructions.

7. Get a written repair estimate from an RVDA-certified shop
The carrier will typically request an estimate from a shop of your choice OR send a field adjuster. Stress at intake whether your policy uses agreed-value, replacement-cost, or actual-cash-value (ACV) — these differ by thousands of dollars on a $1,500 awning + $3,000 sidewall repair. ACV is the lowest payout; agreed-value the highest if you set the value correctly at policy bind.
Prevention
Retract any time you leave the rig
RVIA service-bulletin language and every awning manual: retract before leaving the campsite, even for short errands. A wind event during your absence becomes total-loss because no one acts. The few seconds to retract is the cheapest insurance available.
Retract any time wind forecast exceeds 20 mph
Carefree of Colorado, Dometic, and Lippert all specify retraction at 20-25 mph sustained wind regardless of gusting. Check the NWS hourly forecast (weather.gov spot forecast for the campsite ZIP) at deployment time. Squall-line gust fronts can arrive 30-60 minutes ahead of precipitation with no visible weather; retract on the forecast, not on what you see out the window.
Install (or verify) a wind-sensor auto-retract system
Lippert OneControl, Carefree Mirage, Dometic PowerControl, and similar systems retract autonomously above the programmed threshold (default 20-25 mph; some user-adjustable). $300-500 installed; some rigs ship with it factory. Reduces total-loss claim risk significantly because retraction does not depend on owner judgment + presence.
Stake the awning arms or use awning stabilizer kits in long-term setups
For multi-week / multi-month deployments at a single campsite, install awning de-flapper / stabilizer kits at the front and back support legs, and stake the front legs with screw-in earth anchors. Reduces fabric flutter and arm twisting under wind load. Does not eliminate the need to retract before storms but extends safe deployment in marginal conditions.
Replace fabric every 8-10 years regardless of appearance
UV degradation reduces awning fabric tensile strength over years. A 10-year-old fabric that looks fine has lost meaningful strength versus its install-day spec. Some carriers limit awning coverage for fabric older than the manufacturer's stated service life. Replace proactively at $400-800 fabric cost; the cost is recovered in one avoided claim deductible.
Pre-trip annual inspection — arms, brackets, motor, fabric

Gusts of 30-50 mph occur with regular thunderstorms below the severe threshold and are not specifically warned. The NWS hourly spot forecast (weather.gov, select your location, click 'Hourly Weather Forecast') provides forecast wind and gust values for the next 7 days — the reliable input for awning retraction decisions.
Lesson: 'No severe thunderstorm warning' does not mean 'no awning-damaging wind'. Use the hourly forecast for the actual numerical gust forecast.

Wind sensors have a fatal blind spot: instantaneous gust before sensor sample
Auto-retract sensors typically sample at 1-second intervals and require a sustained reading above threshold before triggering. A microburst gust of 3-5 seconds can exceed the awning's damage threshold and then subside before the sensor commits to retract. The sensor reduces but does not eliminate retraction-decision dependency on the owner. Treat the sensor as a safety net, not a primary system.
Slide toppers fail in the same wind that takes the main awning
Slide-out fabric toppers are smaller-area fabric tensioned over an extended slide. Wind damage to the main awning often coincides with slide-topper damage that is missed in the initial loss inspection. After any wind event, inspect ALL fabric — main awning, every slide topper, any attached screen-room canopy — and document everything in the initial claim photos. Late-discovered damage from the same event is recoverable but adds adjuster friction.
Awning damage 'in transit' may not be covered under comprehensive
Some RV policies treat damage occurring while the rig is in motion under collision rather than comprehensive — wind-flutter damage to a fabric awning that deployed during transit may fall in the gray zone. The fix is to verify the awning is fully retracted AND latched before driving (a clip / strap is provided on most models). Drive-out deployment damage is also typically not covered as it is owner-error.
Dwell-loss carve-outs target long-term campers

Is the wind-sensor auto-retract reliable enough to leave deployed unattended?
It improves safety but does not eliminate the unattended-loss risk. Sensors have sample-rate blind spots, can be miscalibrated, can lose power, and can fail to overcome wind load if the gust is severe. Treat the sensor as a backup. Retract manually before leaving the rig regardless of sensor presence.
