Surface temperature below freezing while precipitation falls as liquid
Freezing rain occurs when warm-air aloft melts falling snow into rain, which then encounters sub-freezing surface temperature and immediately freezes on contact. The recognition signal is liquid rain that glazes the ground / vehicles / lines immediately on contact.
Audible cracking / breaking from trees and lines
Ice-loaded tree limbs and utility lines fail with characteristic gunshot-like cracks. The sound is the warning — falling limbs and lines are imminent.
Pulsing or flickering lights — grid stress
Utility distribution under heavy loading shows brownout and momentary outage events as protective relays trip on individual feeders. Within minutes-to-hours the full feeder failure typically follows.
Loss of shore power

1. Pre-storm site selection — away from trees, into the wind angle
If you can move the rig before freezing rain begins: select a campsite with maximum distance from large overhanging trees, especially conifers (which load asymmetrically and snap or uproot). Orient the rig with the largest mass-axis into the wind direction. Park near hard-sided substantial structures (campground office, bathhouse) for emergency relocation if rig becomes uninhabitable.

2. Inventory survival-system sufficiency
Propane (lbs remaining × hours per lb) = furnace runtime. Generator fuel (gallons remaining × hours per gallon at your typical load) = generator runtime. House battery (Ah remaining × volts ÷ load watts) = battery runtime. Sum the runtimes; compare against the forecast outage duration (utility company outage map shows estimated restoration). Plan to refuel or relocate before you run out.

3. CO alarm verified working before generator + furnace runtime

4. Heat-tape on water lines if connected, OR disconnect and use freshwater tank
Connected city water at the pedestal freezes solid within hours below 25°F. Heat-taped + insulated hose can survive longer. The simpler approach: disconnect city water, drain the connection hose, run from the rig's internal freshwater tank for the duration. Tank capacity (typically 50-100 gallons) is usually sufficient for several days of sheltered occupancy.

5. Stay inside during the storm AND for 24-48 hours after
Falling ice and falling tree limbs continue after freezing rain stops, as ice loading reaches yield points on previously-stressed structures. Most cleanup injuries occur in the first 24-48 hours post-storm. Stay inside; do not investigate damage until the structure has fully stabilized.

6. Power-line awareness if forced outside
Downed power lines may remain energized. Treat every downed line as live. Stay 35+ feet away (and 35 feet from anything in contact with the line — fences, trees, wet ground). Report to the utility company emergency line. Step-voltage (voltage differential between ground points near an energized downed line) can electrocute through bare feet at distances; shuffle-step out of the area if you must move (keep feet close together).

Tree species predicts ice-storm tree-strike risk
Brittle wood species (silver maple, Bradford pear, willow, hackberry) load asymmetrically and snap branches early in ice events. Strong wood species (oak, hickory, sugar maple, beech) bend more before failing. Conifers load asymmetrically and uproot — often at extreme angles. Falling-ice projectile from rooftop AC can perforate the windshield of the rig parked next to you
Ice that accumulates on the rooftop AC shroud, antenna, satellite dish, and roof rails can fall as kilogram-mass sheets during early thaw. The descending ice sheet has projectile-class kinetic energy at impact. Park spacing of 20+ feet from other rigs and from tents reduces casualty risk during post-storm thaw periods.
Generator backflow into the rig increases during winter snow / ice loading
Onboard generator exhaust outlets are designed for normal-condition airflow. Snow / ice accumulating around the outlet can divert exhaust under the rig and into the cabin through underbelly penetrations. OSHA + utility safety guidance: stay 35+ feet from any downed line; if you must move from near a downed line, use small shuffle steps (keep feet close together) to minimize step-voltage exposure.
Frozen pipes become structural failure after thaw
Water expands ~9% on freezing; a frozen water line in the rig expands the pipe, cracks the wall, and only leaks when thaw releases water flow. Damage assessment after a freeze event needs to occur AFTER thaw, with a full plumbing test (charge the system, monitor for pressure drop, walk every accessible plumbing run). Frozen-and-thawed pipes may continue to leak slowly for days as additional cracks reveal.

Can I drive my RV in freezing rain?
No. Once freezing rain glazes the road, RV-class vehicles become uncontrollable — high center of gravity, long stopping distance, large frontal area for side wind. How long can I shelter in place during an ice-storm grid outage?
