Modern vehicles display ambient air temperature; some display pavement temperature directly (Toyota / Lexus, Ram, GM premium trim). Black ice probability rises sharply when ambient temperature is in the 25-35°F range AND any moisture source is present. The hazard window is wider than 'below freezing' — refreeze can occur on a 35°F day if pavement temperature dropped overnight.
Pavement that looks wet on a freezing morning
Black ice is visually indistinguishable from wet pavement at 50+ mph. If ambient temperature is at or below freezing and the pavement looks wet, treat it as ice.
Bridges, overpasses, shaded curves freezing before the rest of the road
"Bridges freeze first" because they radiate heat from both top and bottom surfaces; the road surface only loses heat from the top while gaining heat from the ground below. Shaded sections (north-facing slopes, tree-canopied curves, cut-banks) freeze before sunlit sections. Approach bridges and shaded curves with extra margin even when the rest of the road appears dry.
Lack of tire spray from preceding traffic
On wet pavement, vehicles ahead throw visible spray. On iced pavement, they do not. Sudden disappearance of spray from preceding vehicles on apparently-wet road is a black-ice indicator.

The preceding driver found the ice; you are next. Reduce speed, increase following distance to 8+ seconds, prepare to chain up at the next pull-off.

2. Chain up at the chain-up area at the base of the climb
State DOT chain-up areas are designated paved or graveled pull-offs at the base of major passes with adequate space for 18-wheeler and RV-class vehicles. Install chains while it is still relatively easy — at the base of the climb, on dry ground, before exposure to the icy section. State DOT or contracted chain-installer services operate at busy chain-up areas during chain-law season for $50-100 (faster than DIY for inexperienced owners).

3. Descent technique — gear down, engine brake, steady speed
On the descent, downshift the transmission to a low gear (manual: 2nd or 3rd; automatic: 'L' or '2' or paddle shift to low gear). Engine braking removes most of the wheel-brake demand and reduces brake-fade and brake-overheating risk. Diesel engine-brake / exhaust-brake / Jake brake provides additional retardation; if equipped, engage at descent start. Maintain steady speed (typically 25-35 mph on a chain-law descent); avoid surging.

4. Following distance 8+ seconds on icy pavement
Wet-pavement following distance is 3-4 seconds; icy-pavement minimum is 8 seconds. The braking distance multiplier on ice can be 4-10x the dry-pavement distance. Leave more room than feels conservative.

5. If the rig loses traction or begins to slide
Smooth inputs only. Lift throttle, do not brake hard. Steer in the direction of the slide. Goal is to keep the rig pointed forward; recover speed and direction once grip returns. NHTSA: most ice-induced rollover and jackknife events involve a sudden steering input followed by a sudden braking input — the combination overwhelms what marginal grip was available.

6. If conditions exceed your ability or equipment — turn back
There is no shame in turning back from a pass. The cost of an extra day at a lower-elevation campground is trivial compared to the cost of a rollover. State DOT often closes passes at chain-required-level-3 conditions; an unclosed pass is not necessarily a safe pass for an RV-class vehicle without experienced winter-driving operator.

7. Post-descent inspection
At a pull-off after the pass, inspect for chain damage to the tires / wheel wells / mudflaps, brake temperature (hand near disc — should be warm not hot), tire pressure (warmed tires may need pressure adjustment), and any handling change indicating chassis damage.

Winter-season trip planning around mountain-pass risk
Late October through early May, the Sierra / Cascade / Rocky / Continental Divide passes carry meaningful black-ice and chain-law risk. Plan routes through lower-elevation alternates (I-40 vs. I-70 for east-west; I-5 lowland vs. I-5 Siskiyou) when chain-required forecasts are issued. Chain requirements vary by state. California: Tire Chain Required; some passes allow cable chains (smaller links) on light-duty vehicles but require link chains for heavier classes. Approved traction tires (mountain-snowflake symbol) for routine winter travel
Mountain-snowflake-rated tires (3PMSF, Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) meet a higher snow-traction standard than M+S-rated tires. Many western states accept 3PMSF tires in lieu of chains at lower chain-law levels. Surface-temperature awareness — display the data if vehicle supports it
Some vehicle dashboards (Toyota / Lexus, Ram, GM premium trim) display pavement-surface temperature in addition to ambient air temperature. Bridges freeze first because they lose heat from two surfaces
A bridge or overpass has air below as well as above; the deck radiates heat in both directions and reaches freezing surface temperature 30-90 minutes before adjacent road surface. The 'Bridge May Be Icy' signs are not generic warnings; they are physics. On freezing mornings, approach every bridge and overpass with reduced speed and increased following distance even if the rest of the road is dry.
Diesel engine-brake retardation can equal or exceed wheel-brake retardation on long descents
Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, and Allison transmission engine-brake / exhaust-brake systems are rated for sustained mountain-pass descents.
