Lake Perris is a 2,200-acre California state recreation area in Riverside County, 70 minutes from downtown Los Angeles and 65 minutes from Disneyland. Built in 1973 as the southern terminus of the California Aqueduct, it offers 167 RV sites with 50A hookups across 3 loops, plus 264 day-use boat-in sites. The lake itself draws bass anglers, water skiers, and (in summer) wakeboarders — and the surrounding Bernasconi Hills offer 22 miles of trail. It's the most-developed mid-tier alternative to Lake Tahoe + Mammoth for SoCal-based RVers wanting a 1-2-night basecamp.

What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
The California State Parks site lists Lake Perris as 'open year-round' but doesn't tell you the campground gets strong, dust-laden Santa Ana winds October-April, especially in the loop B + C sites which sit on exposed bluff. The smart book is loop A (sites 101-167) which is partially wind-sheltered by the Bernasconi Hills. Second non-obvious: the 22-mile trail system around the lake is RV-bike-friendly (gravel + paved) but the Bernasconi Hills singletrack is hike-only despite many MTB blogs claiming otherwise — rangers ticket bikes on those sections. Third: there's a hidden cove called Sail Cove on the north shore, accessible only by trail (1.4mi from RV loop) — it has the cleanest swim water in the lake (the south shore beach is heavy-fish-pressure muddy by Memorial Day weekend). Fourth: the lake has a 35mph speed limit BUT designated slalom + jump zones in the SE corner; if you're a wakesurfer, BYO boat day-use is the best in SoCal at this price point.
