Doheny State Beach is a 62-acre California state beach in Dana Point, Orange County. The 122-site campground includes 33 oceanfront RV sites (premium) and 89 inland sites. The wave at Doheny is gentle — California's first dedicated surfing beach (1962) and a learner's classic. The visitor center features tide-pool exhibits + Marine Life Refuge.

What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
The CA State Parks site advertises Doheny as 'oceanfront' but doesn't tell you that ONLY 33 of the 122 sites are oceanfront (sites 33-65) — the other 89 are inland and book just as fast. Reservation hack: oceanfront premium sites release 6 months out at midnight Pacific exactly; rest of inventory at 8am Pacific. Second non-obvious: the surf at Doheny is GENTLE — beginner-friendly waves but not for shortboard advanced (paddle out to San Onofre 15 min south for that). Third: the campground is loud — Pacific Coast Highway runs along the back fence; sites 1-32 (north loop) hear traffic continuously. Site 89-122 (south loop) gets distance from the highway.
