More on Anza-Borrego Desert State ParkField notes, rig limits by loop, seasons, what to do, quiet spots
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park covers 600,000 acres of Sonoran Desert in San Diego + Imperial Counties — the largest state park in California, and the second-largest in the contiguous US after Adirondack. Three developed campgrounds (Borrego Palm Canyon, Tamarisk Grove, Vern Whitaker Horse Camp) with 130+ sites combined; reservable 6 months out via ReserveCalifornia. Critically: dispersed primitive camping is allowed ANYWHERE in the park (with a $10 entry fee per vehicle) — pull off any park road and camp wherever you find a flat spot. Spring wildflower super-blooms (when rainfall cooperates, usually Feb-Mar) bring 100K+ visitors in a 4-week window.

What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
ReserveCalifornia tells you to book Palm Canyon Campground but buries the dispersed-camping option — for $10/day you can park ANYWHERE legal in the park (off-road but on a maintained surface). The rule is 'minimum-impact camping': no permanent structure, pack out everything, fires only in established rings or your firepit. This effectively gives you free 600,000-acre campground access, a fact most first-timers don't discover until day 2. Second: the metal sculpture trail (Galleta Meadows in Borrego Springs) is FREE — 130+ giant rusted-metal sculptures by artist Ricardo Breceda scattered across private rancher land, accessible by dirt roads — an underrated photo op. Third: the most-overlooked feature is Font's Point at sunset — drive 9mi gravel to the badlands rim, hike 0.25mi to the cliff edge — looks like Death Valley but with no crowds. Fourth: cell signal in the park is patchy at best; Borrego Springs town has Verizon coverage but the backcountry is dead — download offline maps. Fifth: 'super-blooms' (mass wildflower displays) require 6+ inches of well-timed winter rain — happen roughly 1-in-3 years; check Anza-Borrego Foundation's daily wildflower reports starting late January.
