More on Custer State ParkField notes, rig limits by loop, seasons, what to do, quiet spots
Custer State Park covers 71,000 acres in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota — among the largest state parks in the US, with 11 campgrounds offering 350+ RV sites combined. Sylvan Lake, Game Lodge, and Stockade Lake are the headline campgrounds; all reservable 90 days out via the SD Parks site. Free-roaming bison herd of ~1,300 animals provides the iconic Wildlife Loop drive (18mi). Critically for big rigs: the Needles Highway (SD-87) and Iron Mountain Road (US-16A) include three tunnels with strict size limits — Needle's Eye Tunnel is just 8'4" wide × 9'8" tall, prohibiting almost all RVs.
The notes below are PickRV's editorial record. None of their figures has been re-read on the park's own pages yet.
What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
SD State Parks site tells you about the Needles Hwy tunnels but doesn't connect the dots: if you have ANYTHING bigger than a small camper van or a tow vehicle, you CANNOT drive the iconic Needles loop or Iron Mountain Road from your campsite. Plan to (1) basecamp at Game Lodge or Stockade Lake; (2) drive your tow vehicle (or rent a Jeep in Rapid City, $90/day) for the scenic loops. Second: the bison roundup (last Friday of September) is FREE to watch and one of the wildest spectacles in the US — 1,300 bison stampeded into corrals by horseback wranglers — but campsites within 30mi book SOLID 11+ months ahead. Third: Sylvan Lake is gorgeous + Instagram-famous BUT its campground (Sylvan Lake CG, 39 sites) is the smallest in the park and books out 4+ months in advance; Stockade Lake is bigger + easier access. Fourth: the Wildlife Loop (18mi paved) is THE iconic drive but bison can stop traffic for 30+ min when herds cross — leave 90 min for an 18mi drive in summer. Fifth: most-overlooked is the Cathedral Spires Trail (Sylvan Lake area) — 3mi RT, gorgeous granite spires, dramatically less-crowded than Black Elk Peak.

Before you rent in South Dakota — key local rules
The everyday license covers rigs up to 26,000 lbs GVWR
South Dakota exempts operators of recreational vehicles used for personal family recreational use from CDL requirements entirely, and CDL applies only to commercial vehicles at 26,001+ lbs anyway; a standard operator license therefore covers personal motorhomes under 26,001 lbs (and in fact at any weight when used personally).
SD Driver Licensing · verified 2026-08-02
No mandatory boater education for adults; under 12 minimums apply
South Dakota does NOT require a general boater education card for adults. Operators under 12 must be accompanied. Missouri River + Lake Oahe + Lake Francis Case are the primary recreational waters; USACE federal rules apply on Corps lakes.
SD GFP — Boating · verified 2026-05-24
OHV registration required; Black Hills NF major trail network
South Dakota requires OHV registration via GFP for any OHV operated on public land. Black Hills National Forest has 600+ mi of designated OHV trails — the largest publicly-managed OHV system in the northern plains.
USFS — Black Hills NF OHV · verified 2026-05-24
South Dakota BAC 0.08%; open container in passenger area prohibited
South Dakota enforces 0.08% BAC for non-commercial drivers (0.04% commercial). Open alcoholic containers prohibited in passenger areas on public highways. Living-quarters use while parked may be permitted but is officer-discretion at roadside stops.
