More on Pfeiffer Big Sur State ParkField notes, rig limits by loop, seasons, what to do, quiet spots
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park sits in the Big Sur River Valley along Highway 1, California — 26 miles south of Carmel, in Monterey County. The 218 redwood-shaded campsites are the best-positioned in the entire Big Sur corridor, walking distance to the river, the Pfeiffer Falls trail, and the lodge. But there's a hard catch: California State Parks enforces a 27-foot RV length limit on the campground access road. Class A's, 5th wheels, and Class C's over 27ft cannot enter, period — they get turned around at the entrance booth.
The notes below are PickRV's editorial record. None of their figures has been re-read on the park's own pages yet.
What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
The official site advertises Pfeiffer as 'the' Big Sur campground but doesn't tell you that if your rig is over 27ft, you have ZERO state park options on Big Sur — Limekiln SP also caps at 24ft, and Andrew Molera's primitive sites have no rig parking. Your only over-27ft option is Plaskett Creek Campground in Los Padres National Forest, 30 miles south, which is first-come no-reservation. Second non-obvious: Pfeiffer's redwood canopy blocks Starlink and most cell signals. Verizon has weak service at the lodge clearing only — plan to be offline. Third: the Pfeiffer Beach access road (Sycamore Canyon Rd) is a SEPARATE single-lane gravel road 1mi north — it has its own 21ft length limit and is unmarked from Hwy 1; bring a passenger to flag oncoming traffic at the blind curves.
