Oak Mountain State Park is Alabama's largest state park at 9,940 acres, located in Pelham 20 miles south of Birmingham. The campground has 144 RV sites with full hookups across two loops (north and south), plus 87 primitive tent sites. The park is most known for its 50+ miles of trails (popular with mountain bikers — the IMBA-rated Red Trail draws regional riders), Alabama Wildlife Center raptor aviary, an 18-hole golf course, and Tranquility Lake.
The notes below are PickRV's editorial record. None of their figures has been re-read on the park's own pages yet.
What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
The Alabama State Parks site advertises 'oak hardwood camping' but doesn't tell you the South Loop sites (61-144) sit on a slope so steep that 30+% of rigs require leveling blocks under their off-side wheels. The North Loop (1-60) is flat and the smarter book if you have a 30ft+ rig. Second non-obvious: the famed Red Trail mountain bike loop (17mi technical) has a 'walk-only' uphill spur from the campground — most riders shuttle from the trailhead parking lot, but you can ride out from your RV site if you take the gravel cutoff at Cabin 7. Third: Tranquility Lake's swim beach is the SECOND beach — the better, less-crowded swim spot is at the FOP Lake (1.5mi southwest), accessible by walking trail from your RV but not marked from the road. Fourth: Birmingham International Airport is 20 min north — Oak Mountain is the only campground in metro Birmingham that allows arrivals after 11pm (gate code given at booking).
