Salt Fork State Park is Ohio's largest state park at 17,229 acres, set in Guernsey County 8 miles east of Cambridge along Interstate 77. The campground offers 212 RV sites (electric only — no full hookups) across multiple loops, plus a 2,952-acre lake popular for boating, bass fishing, and waterfowl. It's the largest base camp option for visitors to Wilds Safari Park (35 min south), Hocking Hills (90 min west), and Ohio Amish country (60 min northwest).
The notes below are PickRV's editorial record. None of their figures has been re-read on the park's own pages yet.
What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
The Ohio State Parks site lists Salt Fork as 'electric only' campground but doesn't tell you it has TWO non-advertised primitive loops (loops H + I) where you can boondock for $10/night — these are not on ReserveOhio and you must call the park office Mon-Fri to reserve. Second non-obvious: the lake's bass fishing is excellent year-round (the lake doesn't fully freeze due to its size and the dam outflow), but the official site only mentions summer fishing — winter is actually peak smallmouth season. Third: Salt Fork Lodge has a hidden 'campers' rate for the indoor pool ($5/visit instead of $15 for non-guests) — present your campsite receipt at the front desk. Fourth: the 14-mile multi-use trail loop is RV-bike-friendly (gravel) but the Buckeye Trail singletrack section through the park is hike-only — many bloggers conflate these. Fifth: the Wilds Safari Park 35min south is the largest conservation safari in North America — most Salt Fork campers don't know it's there and miss the 7am 'sunrise wildlife tour' which has highest rhino + giraffe encounter rate.
